My Shopify Store Suddenly Shows “Unavailable Shop” and I Can’t Access My Theme/Admin Pages

Hi everyone,

I’m currently experiencing a very strange and frustrating issue with my Shopify store.

I actually came back to Shopify after around 2 years, and since returning, I’ve been having this problem specifically with this account/store.

My online store suddenly shows “Unavailable Shop” to visitors, and when I try to access certain sections of my Shopify Admin, I receive this error:

“Your account doesn’t have permission to view this page. Try using a different account or going back to the Stores List page.”

The most confusing part is the theme section.

No matter what I do, the theme on this specific store/account simply does not appear properly and I cannot access or manage it normally. I tried adding/publishing different Shopify themes, including default Shopify themes, but the problem still persists.

I also created a completely new Shopify account/store to test this, and I do NOT have the same problem there. The new account works normally, the themes appear correctly, and I can access the relevant pages without any permission errors.

So this seems to be something specifically related to my original account/store rather than my browser, internet connection, DNS, or the theme itself.

I have already tried:

  • Clearing cache and cookies

  • Different browsers

  • Different devices

  • Logging out and back in

  • Checking DNS/domain settings

  • Installing/publishing different themes

  • Using Shopify’s own default themes

  • Comparing everything with a newly created Shopify account/store

On the new account, everything works. On this specific account, I still cannot properly access the theme/storefront and customers are seeing “Unavailable Shop.”

The biggest problem is that I currently have paid ads running, so I am literally spending advertising money while customers are being redirected to an unavailable store.

Has anyone experienced something similar after returning to an old Shopify account?

Especially:

Unavailable Shop + “Your account doesn’t have permission” + themes not appearing/accessing properly on one specific account, while another new Shopify account works perfectly.

If Shopify eventually fixed it for you, was this an account restriction, backend issue, permissions issue, or something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. #UnavailableShop

I would start by pausing the ads, whatever is causing this is not going to be fixed today.

The theme part is probably not the real problem. I think the permission error and the dead storefront are the same thing, you’re just seeing it in two places. When a store gets restricted at the store level, an unpaid invoice being the common one, the admin locks you out of most sections and the storefront goes down at the same time. Themes is one of the locked sections. So no theme you install is going to fix it, because the theme was never broken.

Your test with the new store was actually useful. It rules out the browser and the theme it just leaves the store.

Check Settings > Billing on the old store, in case there’s an unpaid invoice sitting there from when you stopped using it & whatever email address is the store owner on that store

Probably you don’t want to hear this but I don’t think you can fix this yourself though. That kind of restriction only comes off from Shopify’s side, so you’ll need support either way

also be careful, posts like this attract DMs from people offering to fix it don’t give anyone collaborator access

@karim326 is spot on. This is almost certainly a billing or account restriction issue from the inactive period.

A couple of extra things to check:

1. Check the store owner email not just the admin. Shopify usually sends notifications about unpaid invoices or account holds to the owner email address. Check spam/junk too.

2. When you contact Shopify Support, have your store URL, the owner email, and any screenshots ready. Mention that you’ve already checked billing and can’t see anything outstanding they can see more on their side.

3. Don’t panic about the ads pausing them now saves money. Once the store is restored, you can relaunch and test that everything works before spending again.

This is frustrating, but it’s usually fixable. The restriction is automated and Shopify support can sort it out once you reach them.

Have you checked the store owner email for any Shopify notifications yet?

@alaty Agree with @karim326 and @J.brin. This pattern is almost always account or billing restriction, not a theme bug.

When Shopify holds a store (unpaid invoice, risk review, inactive period fallout), the storefront shows Unavailable Shop and Admin locks Themes and other sections at the same time. Installing another theme will not fix it.

Do this in order:

  1. Pause ads so you are not paying for a dead storefront.
  2. Check the store owner email (and spam) for invoice or restriction notices from Shopify.
  3. Settings → Billing on any admin page you can still open.
  4. Contact Shopify Support with store URL, owner email, and screenshots of the permission error. Say you already checked billing.

Sorry this is a rough welcome back after two years. Once Support clears the hold, the theme access usually returns with it.

Thanks for adding that, Tim. Agree on all points especially checking the owner email (spam included). It’s easy to miss if the notification got buried.

The ‘inactive period fallout’ is a good way to put it. These automated holds happen when an account sits idle with any unresolved billing issue.

Hope you can get it sorted soon, @alaty Once Support clears the hold, everything should come back together."

Hi there @alaty
To me, this sounds more like an issue with account/store access rather than a problem with theme or browser, especially since a brand new store does work fine. I would stop the ads first so you’re not sending paid traffic to a not working storefront. Then, in Settings > Users and permissions, ensure that your account has full access and that you are looking at the right store in the Stores drop−down. Check the store status out under Settings > Plan as well by the by. If those are right, take note of the exact error and which admin pages are affected, and then pursue Shopify’s account recovery or escalation procedures with that information.
