I’VE SOLVED THIS.
The file size was too large. I saved the same image out again but a web optimised version that didn’t effect quality. Reduced it from 744kb to 150kb and it now works!
Issue: Social share image from a Shopify site would not display on WhatsApp (spinner then disappears), while working on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. OP had already used Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to rescrape without success after ~24 hours.
Suggestions: One participant proposed that WhatsApp may not support large dimensions, advising to reduce image width/height (e.g., ≤300 px), keep aspect ratio, and retest via a sharing debugger after cache refresh.
Resolution for OP: Compressing the image solved it. Reducing file size from 744 KB to 150 KB (web-optimized) made the thumbnail appear correctly on WhatsApp.
Follow‑ups: Another user reported a similar issue where the image appears “squeezed.” They tried both resizing to 300 px and compressing the file but saw no improvement. They attached screenshots/images illustrating the distortion, suggesting a different underlying problem. No specific fix was confirmed for this case in the thread.
Outcome/Status: Original poster’s problem resolved via file-size reduction. At least one user’s “squeezed” image issue remains unresolved. Another commenter confirmed “this worked” (unspecified which method), indicating the proposed fixes help some cases.
