Native POS Cash Rounding Needed in the USA ASAP

With the discontinuation of the U.S. penny, Shopify urgently needs to enable native cash-rounding support for U.S. merchants. Thousands of retailers accept cash daily, and without automated rounding at checkout, merchants must manually adjust totals, leading to accounting inconsistencies, customer confusion, and compliance risks.

Countries like Canada implemented cash rounding years ago, and Shopify already supports this functionality in other markets. Extending it to U.S. merchants should be treated as a priority infrastructure update, not an optional feature.

Small businesses rely on Shopify POS for accurate, seamless transactions. Without built-in cash rounding, merchants are left patching together workarounds that slow down checkout, complicate tax reporting, and increase employee error rates.

Please prioritize rolling out automatic cash rounding for all U.S. Shopify POS merchants before the penny is fully phased out of circulation. This is quickly becoming a real operational necessity, not a hypothetical edge case. Banks in many areas are no longer giving pennies, and this should have been made available as soon as the government announced the minting of the last penny.

We should not have to rely on or pay third-party apps for something that is a part of native Shopify in other countries.

I second this. Its no mystery that this change was coming to the United States, and Shopify should have been ready for it beforehand. The fact that there STILL isnt a fix for it is completely unreasonable. They need to stop spending time on UI changes to POS App that no one wants, and work on stuff like this.

So glad to see I am not the only one fed up with all the UI changes that not only were not asked for but are causing more workflow problems than helping. I just gave support an earful with that very same sentiment.

I completely agree with you. It’s frustrating to have to manually calculate and adjust totals every time a cash customer comes in. Since Shopify already has this feature built for other countries like Canada, it feels like it should be a simple switch for the U.S. market too. Until they finally roll this out natively, a common workaround is to create a “manual discount” button labeled “Rounding” in your POS to quickly fix the total at the counter. It’s definitely a bit of a headache, but it might help speed up your checkout line while we collectively keep pushing Shopify for this essential update!

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the idea. I will have the store try that out, because the one app I tried did not work at all and I got absolutely no response from the app developer.

Live in the USA and after the bank told me they wouldn’t be able to get pennies anymore I contacted support and they enabled it for my two stores! It works amazing.

Seriously!? I was told it wasn’t available and basically SOL.

This was just 5 days ago so maybe they changed their mind?

nope on with support now and they say it is not available.

I get the desire to have rounding, but yall are literally going bonkers over a non-issue. The mints have stopped production, but pennies are still very much in circulation. If your bank isn’t giving you pennies, yall need to switch banks or something. There are hundreds of billions of pennies. Surely you can get a hold of a few hundred lol.

It’s really not that difficult. Just got some today. No issues. No words. Just here you are. Have a good day. See you next week.

Well, I am happy for you, but our banks have stopped giving pennies out on request (perhaps because we are near Philly and that was the place the last pennies were minted), but we no longer have a supply in our area.

Support got back to me, and this is available as an early opt-in feature. We had it turned on, and it works great. Now the issue is on the accounting side because our ERP was not ready for it.

“Well I don’t have a problem, so all of you coming here saying you do, are obviously wrong!”. Seriously? Yep, bury your head in the sand and pretend the thing that we are all dealing with, and is officially announced, is “a non-issue”. For those of us that have to run actual business and deal with this change, “Just got some today” anecdote isn’t in any way helpful.

What do you think the tens of thousands of businesses are doing? This isn’t a Shopify issue. If you think this is a problem, why not get out and go ask the restaurant down the street what they do and if you can do the same. It’s not hard. You think you have an issue, so go fix it. Cause the answer isn’t in a forum. Lol

You are seriously going to double down? I am not the one who comes out looking bad here. You’ve got yourself covered.

And again, there is nothing preventing you from getting pennies or asking Shopify to round your order totals or whatever. It’s really not that complicated. I’m sorry you are having such a hard time understanding.

Contact Shopify support via chat and simply ask to have Cash Rounding enabled for your account. It’s in early opt-in currently and have to request it. I did it in all of 5 minutes.

I know a native Shopify version might come out later but if you need cash rounding, there’s a super cheap app that helps with that at POS. You can check out Rounderz until native functionality comes out for it.

Just discovered it exists. Not sure if we somehow got on the early adopters list, it’s POS PRO-only, or available to everyone. But we tested it and it works!

Hey @khoff

hope you’re doing well!

This is becoming a real operational issue for U.S. Shopify POS merchants. Native cash rounding would reduce checkout errors, simplify accounting, and avoid unnecessary third-party workarounds. Shopify should prioritize bringing the same functionality already available in other market to the U.S
