We manage 11 Shopify sites all on Shopify Plus and need this on all. If there is a way to make the draft order invoice support entering Discount codes in Shopify Plus accounts, please explain.
Topic summary
Merchants need customers to enter discount codes when paying draft order invoices, especially for ambassador programs and complex product setups.
Current state: Shopify’s draft-invoice checkout does not support customer-entered discount codes. Only item/order discounts can be applied by the merchant, which breaks discount-by-code reporting.
Shopify Plus note: Checkout customization is available only on Plus, but it’s unclear if it enables discount code entry for draft-invoice flows.
Workarounds proposed:
- Ask customers to put the code in order notes and reimburse later (manual, error-prone).
- Include a discount link in the invoice email (unverified in production by one participant).
- Use the “Draft Helper” app to generate a separate, discountable checkout link from a draft order, allowing customers to input codes.
Impacts raised:
- Plus merchants managing multiple sites require this across all stores.
- Stores using virtual product options (which create draft orders) report lost conversions due to missing code entry.
- Reporting by discount code is hindered when only manual discounts are used.
Media: Screenshots illustrate the draft order screen, invoice email, and the app’s “Generate discountable checkout link” action.
Status: No official Shopify solution or timeline; ongoing requests. An API explanation request for the app remains unanswered.
