Need Help Categorizing Products on Apparel Page

Hello - We have a Shopify/Printful store featuring products about the 1960s and have several designs in years 1960 - 1969 in various colors. Our issue is that every single product is showing up on the main apparel page (see photo), rather than an example year & color with the different year & color options listed below, which would be a much easier user experience. We don’t want people to have to scroll through 30 variations of the same design to get to the next design.

Does anybody know how to categorize each design and list the different colors & years at the bottom?

Hi @Miaugie , have you tried setting them up as variants of a single product instead of as separate products? That would accomplish what you need.

I agree with StackingContext, every design can have its own variants options like year and color. This will make each design unique and easily findable which ultimately improves the user experience of the website.

Hey there @Miaugie!

In addition to what my colleagues said, you may find this forum post helpful in addressing your concern. It walks through how to add variants to a single product in Shopify: How to Add Variants and Sub-Variants to a Product in Shopify - #2 by emilyons

This official Shopify help article also covers pretty much everything you need to know about adding variants: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/variants/add-variants

Hope this helps!

Hi @Miaugie

By default, Printful often creates each variation as a separate product, which causes the issue you’re seeing in Shopify.

To avoid this, you should do the following:

  • In Printful, select one base product
  • Inside that product:
    • Add all available colors
    • Use Year (1960–1969) as a variant option or as a design variation
  • Before syncing to Shopify, make sure that:
    • All variations are being created as variants of the same product, not separate products
  • If the products have already been created separately in Shopify:
    • You will need to merge them (manually or via CSV import)
