Main issue: A staff member accidentally created an automatic discount (applies to all qualifying orders without a code), resulting in every customer receiving a discount and causing revenue loss.
Requested change: Add a dedicated ‘Automatic Discounts’ sub-permission under ‘Discounts’ so staff can manage discount codes without the ability to create automatic discounts. Merchants report similar incidents across other stores, including large losses (thousands of dollars), emphasizing the need for finer-grained permissions.
Shopify response: A support representative acknowledged the risk, confirmed the feedback has been shared with developers, and encouraged affected merchants to submit their experiences via authenticated support to help prioritize the change.
Artifacts: A screenshot was provided to illustrate current permission settings, but it is not essential to understanding the discussion.
Status: No feature change announced yet. The request is under consideration; outcome and timeline remain open.
Yesterday one of my staff accidentally created an automatic discount instead of a normal discount code.
This of course resulted in EVERY customer AUTOMATICALLY getting a discount on EVERY ORDER. Many needless discounts were given, losing me money.
Shopify has recently given more fine grain control over staff permissions.
PLEASE add an ‘Automatic Discounts’ sub-permission underneath the ‘Discounts’ permission. I wouldn’t give any of my staff access to Automatic Discounts. It’s way too dangerous.
Thank you for the screenshot and the details of the situation. I can definitely understand your concern about this and why having that sub permission would be very helpful.
I have shared your feedback with our developers for consideration on your behalf. Hopefully this is something that can be considered in the near future.
@Shay I’m a member of a paid ecom forum and there is a long thread of this same thing happening to many store owners. Some of them with big stores losing thousands of dollars due to accidental automatic discounts.
Our staff need access to give discounts, but controls need to be put into place. We need more fine grain permissions.
Thank you for the follow up @Tones ! I highly recommend that you ask your fellow store owners to ensure they reach out to our authenticated support channels to provide their own feedback and experience on this situation. The more feedback received about this the better chance we have of implementing that change sooner.
