Hi! I am currently on the basic plan. I want to know how I could downgrade because I will be rebranding my company and I only need a cover page with the option to subscribe or email. Therefore I wouldn’t be selling anything during the transition.
During the pandemic, I was able to downgrade and paid a low monthly fee until I was ready to come back. I’m looking for that option but cannot find it. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong place. Please advise.
Thank you for reaching out about this! I definitely understand that it is necessary sometimes to step away from the business sometimes. While the Lite plan might be available for you, I wouldn’t recommend that option as it will remove the online store and you won’t have a landing page for customers to go to.
The plan you most likely will want is the Pause and Build plan. To find it, you will need to go to Settings > Plan in your store admin and choose the Deactivate Store button. You should see a popup asking you to confirm that you want to close your store or open a new store. If you instead see a form asking for the reason you want to close your store, please close the window and reach out to our live support for help.
Some important considerations when pausing your store:
If you have received funding through Shopify Capital, pausing your store will affect your remaining Capital advances. For more information, contact Shopify Support.
The Pause and Build plan isn’t available to Shopify Plus stores.
You can only select the Pause and Build plan if your store is on a paid plan.
Consider uninstalling any third-party apps that have recurring charges so that you’re not billed for those apps after you pause your store.
Thank you so much. This was what I was looking for as it was similar to what I had done last time. I’ll be sure to choose Pause & Build, which is giving that option. Since the monthly fee won’t be for another month, I will phase out November since I already paid for it.
Another question: Will customers be able to subscribe even though the store is in Pause & Build mode? Can I create a separate landing page? Or would I have to delete the current one? Since I’m visual, if you have sample websites to look at, or suggestions, they are welcomed. I just want to change the aesthetics of both my website and the designs of what I sell. I don’t really know which direction to go yet and how to communicate the transitions. Thanks in advance.
When you switch to the Pause and Build plan you will still have customer facing access to the online store. The limitation is that the checkout itself will be disabled. So you can adjust the online store experience to suit your needs while still allowing customers to view your products.
I recommend (if you are using a 2.0 compatible theme) creating alternate product pages with no add to cart/buy now button or un-listing all products and just have the home page or the password page to direct customers to sign up for notifications.
Our live chat support would be happy to get more into this if you would like! I am also happy to answer any specific questions you have about this type of change as well.
Just in case as shay noted the checkout is disabled in the pause & build plan, so if “subscribe” means: purchase a subscription based product ; then that’s not possible for customers to do.
Assuming though by “subscribe” you mean either product based “back in stock” type of notifications, or more likely newsletters, etc.
So something to investigate if time allows and you need something more than the off-the-shelf newsletter section, or password template, some themes have.
Would be interesting to know if it end’s up being useful in the context of pausing a store + maintaining subscriptions|newsletters. Or in combination with a password page.
