NEW Duplicate Product barcode is duplicated by default

We duplicate products all the time for our shop. Just last week, the settings for this changed and now includes a default check box that will duplicate the barcode. Now we have to manually uncheck this box. This is inconvenient. I found that this was an issue back in 2020 that was apparently resolved. I haven’t had this issue in 3 years and this is a NEW inconvenience. I would prefer to see “duplicate product” go back to the way it was. Is there a solution other than manually unchecking barcode each time you duplicate a product?

Hi @lordemily ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and sharing this feedback.

As I can completely understand the impact, I will be sure to pass those details along to our Developers. We’re always looking for ways to improve the platform, so feedback like this is essential. If you have any other feedback/concerns, please feel free to let us know!

Yep, 100% agree. Not sure what the logic was to change this default. As someone that has been a developer for many years (decades), and now manages product development, the goal of any UI change is to have minimal impact to the user, unless the new feature is so amazing that it’s worth learning a new trick. I’m not seeing anything new… other than a change to the way duplicate products has been for the last few years. If this is something you want to continue with, might I suggest there being an option somewhere in the settings that allows the user to determine what values they DO want to duplicate by default.

When will this be solved? I have a client, that now has over 3000 products with the same barcode, because of this issue. There should be a general settings that block duplicating barcodes - it is the single biggest bug/issue in Shopify right now. To fix our issue, we need to print more than 15.000 new labels and stick them to our products!!

When you duplicate a product, a pop-up appears, asking which information you want copied over. If you uncheck barcode, it won’t duplicate the barcode.

If you are blindly duplicating the same product, including all it’s data, then a duplicate barcode should be obvious.

You can simply export the relevant product csv file, select the entire barcode column, and delete… Very easy

Hi @lordemily

You could automate this with a Shopify app, or a small private app or script that uses Shopify Flow to clear the barcode on duplication. That way, whenever you duplicate a product, the barcode field is automatically reset, so you don’t have to manually uncheck the box every time.
