New Shopify Store, Adding Existing Customers

Topic summary

Goal: Open a second Shopify store (Store B), password-protected, and let existing customers from Store A log in with the same email/password they already use.

Key facts:

  • Shopify does not allow exporting existing customer passwords for security reasons.
  • A third-party app (Matrixify) can import customers into Store B and set passwords for them, but these must be new/known values, not the originals.

Viable options for Store B access:

  • Import customers via Matrixify and assign default/temporary passwords, then prompt customers to change them.
  • Import customers and send account activation emails so customers set new passwords themselves.

Implications:

  • A seamless transfer of existing credentials (without customer action) is not possible.
  • Some customer involvement (activation or password update) is required.

Resources: Matrixify documentation link for customer/password import and their support contact.

Status: Open; merchant must choose between activation emails or pre-set temporary passwords with follow-up.

Hey @TartByTaylor !

It’s would technically be possible to import customers into Store B with their passwords as active accounts by using the Matrixify app (https://matrixify.app/documentation/customers/#password), however the tricky part here is that as far as I am aware, there is no way to export the existing passwords from Shop A.

Without know ing the existing passwords, the options would be to import the accounts with default passwords, or to send the customers activation emails so they can set their own passwords.
