Can Shopify fix the new sign-in portal?.. It’s such a mess that it creates multiple accounts if a current account doesn’t remember its sign-in email. I can’t keep up with tracking them, and it’s becoming tedious.
Instead of creating a new account for every person who enters an email address that isn’t linked to an existing account, notify them that the email address is not in the database.
If they’re creating a new account with a new email address, kindly request them to retrieve a sign-in code from us to open a new account.
I completely understand your frustration. The new sign-in flow can definitely become confusing when it keeps creating duplicate accounts instead of simply notifying users that the email isn’t recognized. A clearer verification process would make things much easier for both store owners and customers.
I believe Shopify could improve this by:
• notifying users when an email is not linked to an existing account,
• preventing automatic duplicate account creation,
• and requiring a proper verification or sign-in code before opening a new account.
That would help keep customer accounts organized and reduce unnecessary confusion. Hopefully Shopify considers improving this experience soon.
Unfortunately, that’s what I’ve been doing, but it’s tedious because I have to call clients and customers to inform them about the merging of their accounts. Imagine having 10 of these calls a day?
Obviously this is for non Shop accounts. The customer is actively trying to engage with your store, and hitting a friction point that Shop solves, which probably should be an opportunity piece for you rather than a headache… small incentive to nudge those customers toward Shop Pay at that exact moment could turn a UX gap into a loyalty win.
As a Shopify partner, it’s typically related to accounts being set to optional and the checkout will auto create customers. Switch to required accounts with email confirmation and duplicates are far less. New customer accounts using one-time email login or Shop Pay also help prevent fragmented identities. You can also customize your signup instructions to tell them to login instead of signing up again. Apply the right app and you can get rid of duplicates automatically. For those duplicates that do exist, regular export and merge keeps the database clean via a customer management app structurally in Shopify, email is a unique key so higher standard login flow and account settings produce a more consistent overall/general.
