So we have hundreds of collections and so we tag all products with numerous tags that match the collection name. Previously, prior to this latest Shopify update cycle, when we were adding tags to a product, and we typed in a word like “hats” it would bring up the most frequently used / most obvious collection, “hats” which is great, and then it would list after that other previously created tags that contain that word like “black hats”, “red hats”, “blue hats”, etc.
But now, when we type in a word like “hats” it no longer finds the exact match first, it lists alphabetically all tags that contain that word and we have to scroll way down to find the one we’re looking for, which is a huge time loss for us.
The tagging feature should go back to finding first and foremost the tag that matches exactly what we’ve typed in. It was a way stronger feature
Can you not just hit Enter anymore? Haven’t checked lately but I never selected the tag, I always just hit Enter
It’s more about what the tagging feature brings up as far as matches go. Hitting enter likely takes the first value and they’re saying this value is no longer matching what they expected, but instead is showing the results for all tags that match - in alphabetical order - meaning it may not be the result they are expecting or want.
I don’t know what’s going on with all of these strange UI update decisions lately.
That is a great question about if we can just hit enter. So actually hitting enter does a very strange thing…it creates the tag matching the word we typed in and as the other poster mentioned, it simultaneously selects the first tag in the list that Shopify found. So it does two things at once, which is not good.
In my original post I probably should have added, what was extremely useful about the old way of tagging, is that if you started to type in a tag you wouldn’t have to type in the entire tag name, but Shopify would find the most obvious matching tag and you could then click on it to select it. So you could type in a few characters and it would find the tags that start with those characters.
Yeah they’ve been doing some really dumb stuff these last couple months. I noticed they moved the import from theme store button to below the the theme list a few days ago, which makes me just laugh. I’m starting to wonder if they are doing a daily ai chat bot task “perform a change in admin that makes no sense”
I totally feel your frustration. This update is such a huge step backward and honestly just bad design.
Why on earth would they prioritize an alphabetical list over an exact match? It turns a quick, two-second task into a total time-sink, especially when you have a big catalog to manage. It is super annoying when such upgrades actually break a workflow that was working perfectly fine. You are definitely not the only one annoyed by this productivity killer.
Easy to pick the wrong tag now when the exact one is buried in the middle of the list. Got messy fast once we were bulk editing seasonal products.

This alteration is probably related to the new tag suggestion sorting logic that has been changed to use alphabetical grouping rather than frequency or exact match weighting. As a practical matter, you can make a controlled tag prefix system so your core collection tags ‘crowd out’ the rest of the alphabet, or you can use less ad hoc tagging by putting collection logic into automated collection rules instead. You can also do mass tag management through CSV or through a tagging app to speed up assigning tags while the UI behavior remains unchanged.
