New Zealand - splitting rates between islands

I cannot add two different shipping rates for regions in North Island and South Island, I cannot add New Zealand twice with different regions and different rates, any idea how to do this.

I already have an app which splits out rural delivery postcodes and charges accordingly

@Ellenarosemary You can’t add New Zealand twice within the same shipping profile in Shopify, so the usual approach is to split the country using postcode based shipping zones instead.

  • Create one zone for North Island postcodes

  • Create another zone for South Island postcodes

  • Apply separate rates to each zone

That works much better than trying to duplicate the country.

Since you already have an app handling rural delivery surcharges, you are actually in a good position already. Let Shopify handle the island-based pricing, and let the app continue managing the rural postcode logic.
One thing to note though Shopifys native shipping setup is fairly limited when it comes to regional logic inside a single country. If your pricing rules become more complex then apps like Advanced Shipping Rules or Intuitive Shipping are usually the next step.
But for standard North Island vs South Island pricing, postcode zones are generally the cleanest solution.

Hey @Ellenarosemary Shopify doesn’t allow you to add New Zealand twice so you can’t directly separate North Island and South Island as different countries.

The solution is to keep New Zealand as one shipping zone, and then split it using postcodes.

North Island postcodes then set one shipping rate
South Island postcodes then set a different shipping rate

This way Shopify treats it as one country but still charges different rates based on location.

Since you already have an app for rural delivery:

Keep that app for rural postcodes and extra surcharges
Use Shopify’s postcode rules only for North vs South Island pricing

This combination is the most stable setup and avoids conflicts.

Thank You…

Hello @Ellenarosemary , Shopify does not allow you to add the same country twice in shipping zones which is exactly the limitation you are hitting with North Island and South Island.
The cleanest workaround without a new app is to use your existing rural delivery app and see if it supports postcode based rate conditions — if it does you can set different rates for North Island and South Island postcodes directly inside that app rather than through Shopify shipping zones.
If your current app does not support that a few other options:

  • Shopify Markets — you can sometimes split regions more granularly but it is still limited for within-country splits

  • Carrier calculated shipping — available on higher plans, lets you connect a third party rate calculator that can handle postcode level logic

  • Shipment apps like Starshipit or Easyship — both are popular with NZ merchants and handle North/South Island rate splits quite well out of the box.

Honestly for NZ specifically Starshipit is worth looking at because it is built with NZ and AU courier networks in mind and handles exactly this kind of regional rate split without workarounds.
What courier are you using for the deliveries? That might help narrow down the best solution for your setup.

Hi @Ellenarosemary

Not allow you to add the same country twice with different shipping zones and rates by default.

For New Zealand North Island and South Island shipping rates, you would usually need:

  • A third-party shipping app with postcode/region-based rates

  • Or a carrier-calculated shipping solution

Since you already have an app for rural delivery postcodes, you may be able to create separate postcode groups for the North Island and South Island within that app and apply different shipping rates accordingly.
