Newbie needs answers before committing

Hi. I’m looking to sell art online. I already have a Wix website but I don’t like their ecommerce module and would prefer to use Shopify. But before I start messing about with the site code (a bit of an adventure for me), I’d like to know if what I need to achieve is possible. I’ve searched the Shopify website extensively for answers to these questions but cannot find answers. So your help would be appreciated.

It’s the Shopify Buttons together with a shopping cart that I’m looking at.

A problem, I think, is that my art is arranged into series. So the website comprises pages, one for each series and each page containing between 3 and 8 images. Each single image constitutes a possible order.

Question 1/ Can I put multiple buttons on a single page? And is there a limit (there are about 140 pictures in total)

I don’t want to put a button alongside each image as this would spoil the design. So I plan to put a strip across the bottom of each series page and place the buttons for all the pictures in the series page in this strip.

Question 2 A/ Must a button contain a picture of the product or can it just be a button?

Question 2 B/ Can a button offer option choices eg sizes? Or must the user make such a choice only once they’re in the shopping basket?

Question 2 C/ Is there a ‘continue shopping’ option in the shopping basket and if so, where does it take the user?

Question 2 D/ Must each product (art piece) have its own button, or can I have one button for the series and have the user select an image from the series AND the picture size (and other options such as canvas or print) in the shopping basket?

Question 2 E/ Bit of an obvous one perhaps but can I place the button(s) anywhere on a page, and also the shoping cart icon?

Question2 F/ Must the button take the user to the shoping basket automatically, or can they add a picture to the shopping basket and then continue to add more? (this would require multiple option choices against multiple products in the basket)

Finally, if the option choices cannot be made using the button, or the shopping basket, but must be on the page, do Shopify offer a widget that would allow these choices to made using drop down menus?

So sorry there are so many questions but hopefully they’re all simple answers. I know I could start a trial, but I really don’t want to get messing about in the page code unless I know I can achieve what I need.

Many thanks for your help

David

How do I feel about that? I think you should have read my question. But
thanks anyway.

I don’t have a store. As I said, I already have a Wix website and I want to add buttons and a shopping cart to it. Why would I need a store? I can probably do this myself but I don’t want to go digging about in my code if there’s no point because what I want to achieve is not possible.

Hi @Antelope

I understand your concern and you need a bit. And as you have a lot of questions regarding what Shopify servers and your needs are, I answered 2-3 answers to your questions, as it is not possible to write all the answers here as I do not fully understand those questions.

Question 1/ Shopify allows you to show 50 products per page, so only 50 buttons can be shown. Buttons can be adjusted at any place.

Question 2 B/ Before sending any product to the shopping basket, the user must select the product choices(options). You can use the quick view or the quick add.

Question 2 C/ Yes, “continue shopping” can be added at any place and it can be pointed to any place as per need.

Question 2 D/ As I mentioned in Answer 2 B/, the button can be placed anywhere around the product where quick view or quick add will help the user choose a product option.

Question 2 E/ The button you are referring to can only be placed around the product. A shopping cart icon can be placed anywhere.

Question2 F/ If your product has more options than Shopify provides, then it must go to the product page before going to the basket.

Option choices can be made by using buttons or shopping baskets as well as pages. Yes, shopping provides dropdown menus to make choices.

As per your requirements, there needs to be a change in the theme code because most of the things you won’t get in free themes and if you move to paid themes, then you also need to change in the theme code.

I hope you get answers to most of your questions.

Thank you Saket3d. That helps. But I don’t understand the reference to themes. If I am not having a Shopify website, why are themes relevant? I thought I just add the buttons to the pages on my Wix website. (am I right in thinking that a shopping basket automatically comes with the buttons? Actually I’ve just found this page on the SHopify website which helps, but it still doesn’t explicitely state that a shopping basket is included with the buttons. https://www.shopify.com/buy-button/wix)
