Building a method into your app to account for a test shop feels like the correct path to me. Many apps use the plan type - such as dev shops - to allow for free use.

Again, just stupefied, how Shopify does not provide for it out of the box. Such a basic need for every app out there!
By default, anytime I need to test my live Shopify app, I need to create a new fake temporary Shopify store, and enter the payment info.
Unless I’m missing something..?
As @Jason mentioned, most live public apps fire test charges using the plan type. Since many partners design dev stores for merchants, there is also the added benefit that once the store goes live, apps installed on these stores can create real app charges. Making your app free for dev stores also gets your app featured on the Partner-friendly app list as well.
