Not sure on next steps - banking info

Topic summary

A store owner is locked out of receiving payments after attempting to update banking information in Shopify Payments. The system requires verification using the last 4 digits of the current account, but these digits don’t match any of the owner’s business accounts—even the former credit union confirms they never issued an account with those digits.

Current Status:

  • Issue escalated as high priority over a month ago
  • Multiple support contacts with no resolution
  • Store effectively non-operational, unable to process payments
  • Still paying for Shopify subscription and services during downtime

Dilemma:
Considering deleting the account and starting fresh, but this would require rebuilding the entire store (theme, customizations, API connections).

Community Response:
At least one other user reports an identical issue—12 days in with over $10,000 frozen, receiving only generic weekly responses from the escalation team that don’t resolve the problem.

Hello,

I’ve been running my Shopify eCommerce store for a few years now. Recently, I revamped my store by updating the theme and making several improvements. As part of this process, I needed to update the banking account information under Shopify Payments. I thought it would be a simple task, but it has turned into a frustrating ordeal.

When I tried to update the banking info, Shopify required me to verify the current bank account by entering the account number. However, the last 4 digits displayed are not associated with any of my business accounts. I entered what I know to be the correct previous account number, but it says the information is incorrect.

I even contacted my former credit union, where the account was held, and they confirmed that they’ve never issued an account with those last 4 digits. Despite this, I know the account was set up correctly because I was receiving payments, and I have the bank statements to prove it.

I reached out to Shopify Support about a month ago, thinking it would be resolved quickly. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. I’ve contacted support multiple times, and while the issue has been “escalated” and marked as high priority, it’s been over a month, and nothing has been resolved.

At this point, I’m unable to operate my store because I can’t receive payments. I’m tempted to delete this Shopify account and create a new one just to get things moving, but doing so would mean I’d have to start over - rebuilding the theme, reconfiguring customizations, reconnecting APIs, and more.

Meanwhile, I’m still paying for my Shopify subscription and all other added on services even though my store is effectively at a standstill.

What should I do? Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Word for word I’m dealing with this exact issue. Currently at 12 days. Over $10,000 frozen because I needed to attached a new payout account. Feels like the Escalation team gives you one generic message back a week that still doesn’t solve the problem.
