Hey Community!
We’re hosting an AMA to answer all your questions about optimizing your product feed for Google’s AI Overviews.
Here’s an 8-point checklist you can complete in under 30 minutes. Bring your results (and questions!) to our live AMA on July 2, 2026.
Note: This tutorial is an AI-summary of How to Optimize Your Product Feed for Google AI Overviews: 8 Attributes That Actually Matter authored by @EmmanuelFlossie.
CHECKLIST: The 8 Attributes That Actually Matter
| Attribute | What to Do | Where in Shopify | Difficulty | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Product Title | Front-load keywords: Brand + Product Type + Key Feature + Color/Size. Avoid ALL CAPS, promo text, or vague names. Keep under 150 characters. | Products → Title field | |
| 2 | Product Description | Write for the shopper AND for Google AI. Lead with benefits, include specific dimensions/materials/specs. AI Overviews pull from this. | Products → Description | |
| 3 | Google Product Category | Map every product to a Google taxonomy. Don’t let Google auto-assign — it makes mistakes. | Google & YouTube app → Product data | |
| 4 | Product Type | Use 3+ tiers: Home & Garden > Kitchen > Coffee Makers > Drip Coffee Makers. This gives Google contextual signals. |
Google & YouTube app or Feed manager | |
| 5 | GTIN / Barcode | Required for any manufactured product. If you’re the manufacturer, get a GS1 barcode. If reselling, get the GTIN from your supplier. | Products → Inventory → Barcode | |
| 6 | Product Images | Min 800×800px. No watermarks, text overlays, or promo banners. Show the full product on a clean background. | Products → Media | |
| 7 | Shipping & Availability | Auto-import from Shopify or set up manually in GMC. Mismatched shipping = instant disapproval. | Google & YouTube app → Settings | |
| 8 | Store Policies (Refund/Contact) | Missing refund policy = #1 cause of account suspension. Insufficient contact info = #2. | Settings → Policies; Settings → Store details |
Bonus Tips:
For descriptions, add the most important part of your product details in the first 150 characters. The reason is that consumers will see this, before it gets truncated by the read more link.
Another important tip is to add variant details if they exist. Such as adding colors, size, materials, patterns, age group and gender.
And if we go even deeper, the following attributes are very important, some are new specifically for AI, others are updated for focusing on AI overviews.
These are:

QUICK WALKTHROUGH: Audit Your Feed in 5 Steps
Step 1: Check Your Sync Status
Go to Sales Channels → Google & YouTube → Overview. Look for the Product Listings section. How many products are approved vs. disapproved vs. pending?
Step 2: Fix the Big 3 Errors First
Open any product → scroll to Sales channels → click Google. The most common errors:
“Missing description” → Add a detailed product description
“Missing GTIN or MPN” → Add a barcode OR brand + MPN
“Promotional overlay on image” → Replace images with clean product photos
Step 3: Optimize Your Top 10 Products
Start with your best sellers. Rewrite titles using this formula:
[Brand] + [Product Name] + [Key Feature] + [Size/Color/Material]
Example: “Bonavita 8-Cup One-Touch Drip Coffee Maker – BPA-Free, Stainless Steel”
Step 4: Check for AI Readiness
Visit Shopify Help: Optimizing your products for AI platforms. Make sure your product data includes: Title, Description, Images, Product Type, Vendor, Collections, Tags, and Barcode.
Step 5: Review Your Policies
Go to Settings → Policies. Make sure your Refund Policy, Shipping Policy, and Contact Information are complete. Google checks these before approving your account.
