Orders that are cancelled immediately after by the customer

Hi there,

We have a Shopify ecommerce site and lately we receive many many orders that have a ‘high risk of fraud detected’. The order is placed, one minute later the customer sends an email to request to cancel the order, which we then do. It’s always the same credit card details, but different names and (email) addresses.

These orders seem very fraudulent. My question is can we block a certain credit card? The IP addresses are constantly different and from web proxy, and I can see the orders always come from the same location (Emirates). How can we prevent these ‘fake’ orders in the future? And is there any harm for us as it all seems a bit odd.

Thank you very much for your help!

Best regards,

May

Hi @MayDay2

Jason here with Beacon Fraud protection!

It sounds like you are experiencing a card testing attack.

You can download fraud filter and create a rule to block out the last 4 digit CC number!

I’ve attached a screenshot below of how this looks.

With this, you can have fraud filter automatically cancel the order.

Please note, that depending on your payment gateway, you might incur Shopify fees from the cancellation. If this is the case, make sure you switch to manual payment capture.

I hope this helps you!

Thank you @Beacon-Jason !

Will do this, but still, there is no other way to prevent the order from even happening, right?

Thanks again!

Hi @MayDay2

There are several ways you can prevent the order from passing checkout, but it does not involve free apps like fraud filter. This also requires you to have Shopify Plus and/or pay for an fraud prevention app to access more advance options.
