Organizing method for products being searchable based on gallon, quart, dimensions, etc.

Question: What is the best setup so when a shopper searches or products based on sizes (gallons, quarts) and dimensions (inches and feet) they can easily find them? Our site sells various products that have several different sizes - Quart, 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, etc. Also we sell various products that have various sizes and dimensions - 1 Inch, 11"x17", 12ft, etc.

We do not link products by sizes and dimensions in our menu structure and we use “Smart Search & Filter” for search. And if you you run a search and scroll down on the left under “Collections” it lists 1 Gallon, 1 Inch etc.. because (before I took over) the products sizes/dimensions were setup in individual Collections. So, there will be a collection titled “1 Gallon” with just one product in it - a product that comes in 1 Gallon size. And so on and so on.

Having all these collections with 1 or 2 products in them based on sizes and dimensions seems like a waste. Could anyone share best practices for this type of search by size/dimension?
