Out of country site traffic. No wonder I have no sales. Help!

I only sell products withing the USA. Here’s a screenshot of the traffic Shopify is sending me. Chile, Jamaica and Venezuela. Why is this happening? How can I fix this?

Hey @DoctorGreenbud

Shopify isn’t sending you that traffic. The visitors from Chile, Jamaica, and Venezuela are likely coming from one of these sources:

Bot/crawler traffic. A huge percentage of international traffic on small stores is automated bots, not real people. They inflate your visitor count but aren’t actual shoppers.

Social media ads targeting. If you’re running any ads on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, check your targeting settings. Sometimes the default audience is set to “worldwide” instead of US only. This is the most common cause when merchants see random international traffic.

Your store is publicly indexed. Google indexes your store for anyone worldwide. Someone in Venezuela searching for your product type can find your store even if you don’t ship there.

To fix what you can control: if you’re running ads, double check that your audience is limited to the United States.
In Shopify, go to Settings → Markets and make sure your only active market is the US. You can also set your international market to “Inactive” so visitors from other countries see a message that you don’t ship to their location.

The bot traffic you can’t really prevent, but it also isn’t costing you anything. Focus on whether your US traffic is converting, that’s what matters.

Web traffic is what it is. You’re on a public domain. You should expect this.

If it’s not causing you trouble in terms of fake customer accounts, fake orders, email resources, or skewed conversion rates, you can pretty much ignore all irrelevant traffic.

If you want to block people in other countries, get a country blocker app.

Hello there @DoctorGreenbud
This is pretty common. Traffic reports account for all visitors, not only those that are your target customers. So me visits come from bots, VPNs, SEs, or “peeps” from other countries. If you’re only selling in the US, ensure that you have only the US enabled under your Shopify Markets settings and keep an eye on your analytics for any suspicious traffic. You may also use Google Analytics to analyze traffic sources and determine if the international visits are real or robots.

this is super common and usually means your traffic is coming from bots or really broad ad targeting. if you’re running any paid ads, double check your geo settings and make sure you’re only targeting countries you actually ship to. also worth looking at which sources are sending those international visitors in google analytics.

if it’s mostly organic, your site might be ranking for keywords in other regions. you can set a geographic target in google search console under international targeting, which helps google understand who you’re trying to reach.
