Pay in local currency internationally

My location is in Dubai UAE, if I want to sell internationally, I cannot use Shopify Payments, because it is not supported in my region, having said that, if people want to buy from my store, they are stuck with the option to pay in my local currencey, whcih is AED, I feel that this is a deal breaker, If I was the customer, I would immediatly cancel any plans to buy from my store.

Is there a way I can enable paying in local currency for international customers, without having Shopify Payments?

Hi, this is a very valid concern and you’re 100% right from a customer-experience point of view.

Unfortunately, Shopify only supports true multi-currency checkout when Shopify Payments or Adyen is enabled, and since Shopify Payments isn’t available in the UAE, customers will always be charged in the store’s base currency (AED) at checkout, even if prices are displayed in their local currency.

That said, there are workable alternatives depending on your setup and target markets:

• You can use PayPal and other international gateways, many customers are charged in their local currency on PayPal’s side, even if Shopify shows AED.

• You can combine Shopify Markets (for price display) with clear checkout messaging to reduce drop-offs.

• Some merchants use separate stores per currency/region (e.g. USD store for US customers) for a true local-currency checkout experience.

• More advanced setups involve external checkouts or custom solutions, though these require development work.

So while Shopify has this limitation for UAE-based stores, it’s not a deal breaker if handled correctly with the right payment setup and UX strategy.

It is possible with only third party Checkout solution, Not with third party payment gateway on Shopify Checkout. Look at Easy_Pie_Checkout, that works with your Stripe account and supports multi currency.
