Payment Flow Issue for Partners with Collaborator Access

As a Shopify Partner working with multiple clients, we’ve encountered a significant workflow issue when purchasing themes for client stores where we have collaborator access.

Current Problem: When we need to purchase a theme for a client’s store, we’re forced to:

  1. Ask the client to temporarily remove their payment card

  2. Complete the theme purchase

  3. Ask the client to re-add their payment card

This creates an unprofessional experience and unnecessary friction in our client relationships.

Suggested Solution: Partners with collaborator access should have the option to use their own payment method for specific purchases (themes, apps, etc.) without affecting the client’s stored payment information.

This would allow us to:

  • Handle technical purchases directly and professionally

  • Include theme costs in our project invoicing

  • Avoid awkward back-and-forth with clients about payment card management

  • Maintain a more seamless service delivery

Impact: This improvement would significantly enhance the partner experience and allow us to provide better service to our clients.

Thank you for considering this feedback.

Hi @benjamin.launchlab ,

I know how tough it is. Currently, Shopify limits payments to the store owner’s method for security reasons, but a workaround that works is to use Shopify’s “Partner Billing” when available. Using your Partner Dashboard, you can create an app or theme charge that invoices the client, so you can manage purchases without ever touching the client’s card.
When it comes to themes, you can also order through your own development store first, and then move the theme in to the client store. This allows you to separate payments from ownership, while enabling you to professionally manage the setup. Both increase conversions and keep the client experience seamless.
