Payment shortcuts are grey at cart

Hi, on both desktop and mobile the payment shortcut or option buttons are greyed out and I can not work out to resolve this.

This usually happens when the payment buttons Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc. aren’t fully available or are being disabled by the theme or another app. I’d recommend checking:
• Whether your payment provider is active in Settings Payments. • If the issue persists when using Shopify’s default theme (to rule out a theme conflict). • Whether any cart or checkout customization app is interfering with the payment buttons. • Clear your browser cache and test in an incognito/private window.

Yes i just went through a heap with chat and it looks like my theme no longer supports the dynamic buttons. disapointing

try changing the theme, if it works, you can be sure that it is the theme issue

Greyed-out accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal) almost always trace back to one of three things, so work through them in order.

First, check that a third-party accelerated checkout method is actually activated under Settings > Payments. If none is switched on, Shopify only shows the plain unbranded button, which can look disabled compared to the branded ones you’re expecting.

Second, check your theme is current. The “Show accelerated checkout buttons” setting under the Buy buttons block only exists on current Theme Store theme versions, so an older or heavily customised theme can render the buttons in a broken, unclickable state. You’ll find the toggle in the theme editor under the product template’s Buy buttons section.

Third, look at your apps. Accelerated checkout buttons are known to conflict with currency converter apps, apps that interact with the cart, and apps that redirect to an external checkout. They also don’t support cart attributes, so anything adding a terms and conditions checkbox, gift-wrap option or delivery date picker to the cart can stop them working properly. Try disabling cart-related apps one at a time to isolate the culprit.

Full detail on all of this is in Shopify’s compatibility guide: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/dynamic-checkout/compatibility

Hey @Jackson_Opals ,

From your screenshot, it looks like the accelerated checkout buttons (such as Shop Pay, PayPal, or Google Pay) are rendering but remaining disabled.

A few things I’d check:

Test the store in an incognito/private browser to rule out browser extensions or cached scripts.
If you’ve added any recent apps or custom JavaScript related to the cart, temporarily disable them to see if they’re interfering with the accelerated checkout buttons.

Open your browser’s Developer Tools (F12) and check the Console for any JavaScript errors.

Confirm that your accelerated payment methods (Shop Pay, PayPal, Google Pay, etc.) are correctly configured and active in Settings → Payments.

If possible, preview the store using an unmodified Shopify theme (such as Dawn). If the buttons work there, the issue is likely related to your current theme or a customization.

Could you also share:

Your store URL
The Shopify theme you’re using
Whether this started after installing an app or making theme changes

That information will help narrow down the cause.

If you found my reply helpful, feel free to mark it as the accepted solution so it can help other merchants following this discussion.

Thank You !

Since Shopify support already confirmed it’s the theme not supporting dynamic buttons, the debugging is essentially finished - the next question is what to do about it, not what’s causing it. A few practical paths, roughly in order of effort:

1. Check if it’s a version issue, not a permanent theme limitation. If your theme is a paid/premium theme from the Theme Store, check whether a newer version exists that added dynamic checkout support (a lot of themes added this after Shopify made “Show accelerated checkout buttons” a standard block feature). Contact your theme’s developer directly and ask specifically: “Does the current version support the accelerated checkout Buy buttons block?” - not a general support question, but that exact one, since it’s the kind of thing that gets a fast yes/no answer.

2. If your theme genuinely doesn’t support it and won’t be updated, this becomes a cost-benefit decision, not a technical fix: how much revenue is the missing one-click Shop Pay/Apple Pay/Google Pay actually worth to you versus how attached you are to this specific theme’s design. Accelerated checkout buttons do measurably lift conversion for mobile shoppers, especially since they skip manual address/card entry entirely - worth weighing that against how much custom work you’d lose by switching themes.

3. A middle path, if switching themes entirely feels too disruptive: have a developer add the missing Buy buttons block support to your current theme’s product/cart templates manually, using Shopify’s dynamic checkout documentation as the spec. This keeps your existing design while adding the missing functionality, though it does require someone comfortable editing the theme’s Liquid/JS directly.

Hey @Jackson_Opals

hope you’re doing well!

Greyed-out express checkout buttons usually mean the payment method isn’t available. Check your payment settings, Markets, and shipping configuration, then test with a default theme to rule out a theme or app conflicts
