Update: this seems to be an issue with currency conversion and the króna not being supported by paypal. I’ve tried creating a draft order, switching the currency to USD and sending an invoice to the customer in hopes that they’ll be able to use paypal if it’s in USD, but that doesn’t really solve the problem for other Icelandic customers who will just see that paypal isn’t an option. In my experience most people don’t write in, they just leave.
Topic summary
- Issue: PayPal is not shown at checkout for customers with Icelandic addresses on a Shopify store, despite PayPal operating in Iceland.
- Finding: The likely cause is currency support—PayPal does not support the Icelandic króna (ISK), so the Shopify–PayPal integration hides the option when the market currency isn’t supported.
- Workaround tested: A draft order was created in USD and a PayPal invoice sent; this enables PayPal for that customer but isn’t scalable, and many shoppers won’t reach out and may abandon.
- Decision/action: A secondary international market was created in Shopify Markets with USD as the currency for countries whose native currencies aren’t supported by PayPal, so PayPal remains available at checkout.
- Trade-off: Shoppers in affected countries lose native-currency pricing, but the team expects higher conversions due to PayPal’s convenience for international customers.
- Status: Waiting on PayPal’s response; no confirmed platform-side fix yet. The thread remains open regarding future ISK support or improved currency handling.
- Key terms: ISK (króna) = Iceland’s currency; Shopify Markets allows different currencies per market.
