Pl critique my store. Low Conversion rate YOY.

Topic summary

A store owner selling custom maps and art reports a severe conversion rate drop from 2.2% to 0.03% over the past two years, despite increasing traffic from paid ads. Sales were steady three years ago, but recent investments in a new theme, improved site speed, updated images, and advertising haven’t reversed the decline. The owner also sells successfully on Etsy, confirming product desirability.

Key feedback received:

  • Header & homepage clarity: Header takes excessive space; initial sections don’t immediately communicate that the store sells art/maps
  • Visual content: Add more videos showing products in use (hiking groups, families at national parks, action sports) to sell the experience and emotional connection
  • Social proof issues: Reviews exist but aren’t consistently visible across products; some users see different content based on location. Testimonials and customer stories need better prominence
  • Product page improvements: Inconsistent image sizes, confusing text overlays on images (“choose your option at checkout”), and need for dedicated customization sections using metafields
  • Missing elements: FAQ sections, stronger value propositions explaining why customers need these lifestyle/luxury items, use-case examples, and potentially a live map preview tool
  • Mobile optimization: Layout needs tightening and faster load speeds

Potential external factor: Competition from cheaper alternatives may be drawing customers away.

The discussion remains ongoing with the owner actively seeking clarification on technical issues and implementation details.

Hi everyone,
I could really use some honest feedback from this amazing community.

My online store actually did quite ok about three years ago — I was getting steady sales and good feedback. Cobersion rate w appeox 2.2%. But over the last two years or so, my conversion rate has dropped drastically, (literally .03) and now I’m barely getting any sales, even though traffic is increasing due to paid ads.

I cut back on paid ads in 2024 due to poor ROAS. We again stated advertsing earlier this year.

I’ve invested in updating my theme to a paid theme recently, improving site speed, refreshing product images and descriptions, and I regularly spend on ads that are driving visitors — but they just aren’t converting. It’s been frustrating and honestly, a bit disheartening. I sell on Etsy too, and although Etsy too has been slow, I have proof of sales and know my products are desirable.

I’d love to hear what helped you turn things around if you’ve been through something similar. Also, kindly no sales pitches or “try my service” messages — I’m really just hoping to get insight from fellow shop owners who’ve been there. I opened this store pre-COVID, but only worked on it seriously from 2021.

Thanks so much for your time and support :folded_hands:

Is it possible that, after the good start of the website, there is a cheap alternative that attracts your customers?

That may be the reason why your sales and conversion rates dropped.

Hi @WVS_Ank

Welcome to the community. It is great that you stick with your store for 3 years, a lot of people could not make it that long. But hope your conversion rate improves. I have some feedback, but I’m not sure if it will help, but think about it.

In general, your theme is great, good font and colors, solid product images, and a moderate amount of text. But here are a few things that I noticed that could be improved:

  • Your header is too big for me, it takes up too much space, and other, more important content is pushed below the fold. You have a bit longer collection names there, and it might not fit all in one row, but your theme has those options ,so think about it.
  • On your homepage for my first visit, even I did figured you sell art/maps, from the first two sections tex,t it is not 100% clear. Maybe add small paragraph below the hero title that makes it clear " You will get art/maps"
  • Big impression is that you should add more videos. You need to sell the idea, experience, and video can show your customers that. Video of beautiful wood, where a friendly group hile and laughs, connected to your map, could do wonders. Think you’re missing out on that. And a lot of other examples, family inthe national park, action packed video for ski/snowboarding, like GoPro has and so on.
  • You could use some testimonials on the homepage or even better, videos again, from happy customers, people share that and it is great for conversation
  • “As seen in” section should contain links to articles so customers can really confirm it and read about it
  • “Let customers speak for us from 1120 reviews” is not functional at all, it is not aligned, and does not mean much if you cannot access those reviews. And I could not find any review onthe product page also so that number looks random.
  • 40,000+ Happy Customers, Stellar 5 Star Reviews that sound good but again ,it could have been a random number. customers need a real reassurance, real reviews/testimonials, stories you can add as blog posts, and social proof
  • For the product page, I think there is some work, I saw a few products that do not have the same image sizes, so it looks messy. Als,o no space between big images, visually I can concentrate on one.
  • On several images there are some guides, for example, " choose your option in checkout,t" but I do not think that is true and you can add customization on the product page, no? Looks confusing.
  • I would make separate sections, unique for each product, that explain that customization in more detail. Noting complex, just an image and a text section. That could be done with metafields. Same for from options or anything that you have some text on product images.
  • You could use more sections, same for each product page like: logo/text for assurance, FAQ, and a real review app. All that would make product page a lot different and I belive it would convert more.

Good luck and I do hope orders will come, it is a nice store.

Thank you for the detailed message!

When you say you couldn’t find any reviews, you mean you cannot click on any reviews? I have so many reviews in the store. Where did you not find the reviews? On the homepage? I dont have reviews on all product pages, but I do have them on many.

Sorry i dont think I understood this, but I will scan the store

  • On several images there are some guides, for example, " choose your option in checkout,t" but I do not think that is true and you can add customization on the product page, no? Looks confusing."

Really appreciate your input

Can you please explain? Sorry I dont understand. You mean when they come, they find that it looks cheap?

I have Judge.me as my app and when I clicked on the carousel, it did take me to the reviews.

Also, by SECTION do you mean add more info on the product page Like I have for Shipping and Returns tabs?

HI, I did not check many products but a few I did, I did not see any review

for example https://www.worldvibestudio.com/collections/bestsellers/products/golf-courses-map-of-usa-public-golf-course-map-poster-push-pin-option

And on home, but more in footer as it shows on every page you have “Let customers speak for us
from 1120 reviews” that should link maybe to a separate page with some reviews or all id possible.

Same product, it have this image https://www.worldvibestudio.com/cdn/shop/files/LOGO_Custom_Sheet_golf_PUBIC.jpg?v=1743191901&width=750 and text “CHOOSE YOUR
'ON AT CHECKOUT” that does not sounds right. Or https://www.worldvibestudio.com/collections/national-park-push-pin-canvas/products/national-park-map-rustic-map-of-63-national-parks-of-usa-framed-canvas and image https://www.worldvibestudio.com/cdn/shop/files/NP_DULL_Custom_shopify1.jpg?v=1734338215&width=750 . You can set as a section with text that would be good for SEO too, but primarily to explain better, and text to be bigger and clearer.

I see this on footer, no carousel no links. By sections, I mean like on demo page https://beyours-theme-beauty.myshopify.com/collections/skincare/products/glow-drops " Why Be Yours?, FAQ, " or “Our Green Values” https://beyours-theme.myshopify.com/collections/all/products/calathea-stromanthe-triostar image and text.

Oh wow, I am seeing the full carousal at my end…thanks for that. I will look into it.

We are seeing this very differently on my side…may I ask where you saw this page with the missing carousel?

I am seeing this

Thanks, are you based in the US? I am seeing things very differently at my end and I made a few people check and even they dont see somethings you are seeing. Odd

Yeah, I am not fromthe US, but as you mentioned it I did try with VPN, but no luck, still the same, but it makes sense that some apps do that and show different content based on location. So if you see it then it is fine. Sorry for the confusion, I should have checked it.

No I appreciate your feedback. Thank you

Hi @WVS_Ank ,

We appreciate your inquiry in the Shopify Community. We are MooseDesk, a comprehensive Live Chat, FAQ & Helpdesk App designed to elevate your customer support experience.

Congrats on your new store! Especially, we were truly impressed by how customized the products for your customers so that these will become a piece of their lifestyles. Then, you also build trust in customers successfully with lots of testimonials and reviews.

However, I have some comments to boost sales. Here are some of my recommendations for conversion rates, please kindly check.

1.Optimize Hero banner

With just a glance over the hero banner, I can decide whether to continue exploring a shop or not. At my first view of your website, I think the hero banner could be more attractive. Therefore, I recommend that you optimize Hero Banner with the most captivating text font along with your tagline (benefits offered to your customers):

  • Your Memories. Mapped Beautifully.

  • Turn Moments Into Art.

2. Add the uses & value proposition of your products

Since your maps are more of a lifestyle/luxury item, customers need a stronger why.

  • Include sections showing how people use your maps – e.g., for anniversaries, travel memories, home decor, or gifts

  • Add visual use cases or lifestyle shots (e.g., a framed map in a cozy living room or a couple gifting it).

  • Highlight your value proposition: what makes your maps different (customization quality, sustainability, unique design, etc.).

3. Offer Personalization Previews or Builder

As one of your biggest strengths is customization, if possible, add a live map preview tool so customers can see their customization before purchasing.

This gives them confidence in what they’re ordering and increases engagement time.

4. Leverage social proof & stronger CTA

It could be more incentivizing if you add a timing countdown (20 hours:30 minutes left…). Also, leverage Social Proof and Scarcity by displaying low-stock alerts (e.g., “Only 3 left in stock!”) to create urgency and highlighting recent purchases (e.g., “X people bought this in the last hour”) to encourage action.

Also, with that pop-up window, you can try “Add your mail and Get 10% off your first custom map – just tell us where you’re from!”

5. Improve Mobile Experience & Speed

On mobile, the layout could be tighter and more scroll-friendly.

  • Optimize image sizes for faster load speed – slow sites kill conversions.
  • Test performance with tools like PageSpeed Insights.
