Please help clarifying Dawn theme pages design technical approach

Topic summary

Topic: Difference between what appears under Store > Pages vs Store > Navigation > Menu in Shopify’s Dawn theme.

  • Issue: Only “Contact” appears under Store > Pages, while Navigation menus list “Home,” “Catalog,” and “Contact.” Expectation was to create pages in Store > Pages and then assign them to navigation.

  • Clarification: “Home” and “Catalog” are built‑in/system pages (theme templates) provided by Shopify and do not exist as user-created Pages, so they don’t show under Store > Pages. They are always available to link in navigation.

  • Dawn detail: The Dawn theme ships with a pre-added “Contact” page. “Contact” is a standard, user-creatable Page type, so it appears under Store > Pages and can also be linked in menus.

  • Implication: Store > Pages lists custom/static pages created by the merchant; Store > Navigation > Menu lists all linkable destinations, including built-in system pages and custom pages.

  • Outcome: Resolved by identifying the system-vs-custom page distinction. No further actions noted. Screenshots were provided but the explanation above captures the key behavior.

Could someone elaborate on explaining the Shopify technical design goals towards Admin API’s UI: Why under initial Dawn theme on Admin UI at Store/Pages (see Picture 1) shows me only Contacts, but for example, Store/Navigation/Menu (see Picture 2) displays Contacts, Home, Catalog? I would expect to add page via Admin UI Store/Pages, thus seeing the list of aforementioned Contacts, Home, Catalog, etc. displayed under Store/Pages and only then selectively assign pages to corresponding navigation on-demand . It’s decision is either very counter-intuitive or I just have lack of knowledge towards my journey as Shopify Dev. Whichever the case would be, any effort putting me on a right track would be respected . Thanks !

p.s. Before answering this, my f**irst though would be that Home and Catalog are in-built pages (accessible without explicit assignment to Navigation), whereas Contacts are arbitrarily custom page that would be required to assign .

Found the answer myself.

Although current Dawn’s (theme) version comes with Contact page pre-appended, unlike Shopify built-in pages such as Home, Catalog, the Contact page is the one that can also be added by user via Admin UI. That’s why we do not see the Home, Catalog pages under Store/Pages as it is available out-of-the-box via Store/Navigation/Menu.

P.S. I really wanted to appreciate and thank for Shopify’s anti-support or any other 3rd parties ignoring this question. It only makes myself be more proud of. Cheers !
