I offer a few products that require a deposit but loads of people think that is the full price and then it means refunds and then I lose out on card fees.
I know there are apps that can produce a product BUT is there any that can come up for a small amount of products on my store.
To say something like “ You are paying a deposit only - this is not the full cost of the product. See main product description for full cost”
You can use an alternate product page template for these products where you’d simply add a text block with “Deposit only…” right next to the product price.
No code required, product template can be assigned in bulk – it’s the quickest, simplest to implement solution.
Any deposit apps you find on the Shopify App Store should help you display the clear messaging you’re after, at least on the product page. Some apps would help you display in cart and at checkout as well.
I’ve noticed merchants often overlook a few things when capturing deposits/deferred payments:
When you capture the deferred payments on a later date, by default Shopify only helps you send an email payment receipt to customers upon auto-capturing the payment. Generally we recommend merchants to add another email (as a reminder) to the customers before the payment due date.
Rarely we’ve heard of cases where customers have forgotten they bought a product with a deferred payment purchase, but better be safe than sorry.
Check the payment methods/gateways that the deposit app supports. Most apps that use Shopify Selling Plans (the functionality used for preorders, deposits, subscriptions, rentals etc.) only support Shopify Payments and PayPal (maybe there are exceptions, depending on where you’re based).
When you sell items on Shopify Selling Plan, Shopify will display a “purchase agreement option label” in the customer’s cart and at checkout.
You can customise this (no coding needed) under Edit default theme content > Purchase agreement option label. Make it even more clear and tailored to your store’s deposit policy. By placing their order, the customer is agreeing to your store’s policy.
I run an Aussie preorder app (Early Bird) with deposit functionality, let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way!
You might need a Popup app that has an option to be put on certain pages.
There are good apps in Shopify App Store. Also, I invite you to check out Elfsight’s Popup app - you can choose the desired product pages to display the popup with your custom alert.
You can easily use Bevy Design to create a small pop-up specifically targeting the deposit products. The pop-up can appear on the product page or when someone clicks “Add to Cart,” displaying a clear message like:
“ You’re paying a deposit only — this is not the full price. Please see the product description for the full cost.”
Setting it up is simple, and coding is not required, helping to reduce confusion and refunds. Bevy Design offers pre-made templates for quick setup. With a free plan available, you can test the app to see how it benefits your store. If you need help with your campaign, feel free to reach out.
