Hi,
I am about to launch an international marketplace and I have translated it into the main Western languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian) so that customers from those countries feel it local when they visit the site.
However, I am really concerned about the Portuguese one because ‘Shopify Languages’ only offers ‘Portuguese (Portugal)’ or ‘Portuguese (Brazil)’, but not a simple ‘Portuguese’. This wouldn’t be a problem if I could just edit its title or, at least, the way it is displayed in the Geolocation App selector, so that visitors from either Portugal or Brazil can just select ‘Portuguese’.
If you think about it, customers from Brazil wouldn’t feel the site really local if they see a dropdown with these options:

English

French
-
German
-
Portuguese (Portugal)
-
Spanish
And the same for Portuguese visitors if they see ‘Portuguese (Brazil)’ in the dropdown menu.
“Alright”, I thought. Maybe I should just add both and have a ‘Portuguese (Portugal)’ and a Portuguese (Brazil)', and everyone happy! Well… apparently, Shopify only allows one active Portuguese language in a store!! WTF???
WHAT IS THE POINT OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LANGUAGE NAMES IF WE CAN ONLY USE ONE OF THEM?
English and Spanish are spoken in many more countries than Portuguese and still they are just ‘English’ and ‘Spanish’ in the language dropdown selector.
COMPLAINT:
I contacted Shopify chat support to bring this concern up and I was told that it would be looked into as it makes sense. However, nearly 2 months later, I haven’t received any update on this matter. In fact, I didn’t even receive an email with the chat transcription, which I always get whenever I contact Shopify Support. I WAS IGNORED despite the fact that I pay the $299/mo plan (plus however much the extra apps cost), and this is my 5th Shopify store, so a loyal Shopify user.
FORMAL PETITION:
Can we have a language option simply called ‘Portuguese’? I honestly don’t think this is a big request as it would only imply a duplication of any of the other Portuguese options and add it to the ‘Shopify Languages’ options as simply ‘Portuguese’.
I really hope this will be taken into account because I am sure that in the future this will help others who may face the same issue but may just go with what’s available instead of asking for a proper solution.
