POS iPad app initially shows higher price before reverting to tax inclusive price

Topic summary

  • Occurs on two iPads running latest iOS and POS app versions
  • Market settings already configured to include VAT and disable dynamic tax display
  • Video and screenshot evidence provided showing the behavior

Response from Shopify:

  • Shopify’s Retail Team confirms awareness of this issue
  • Development team is already investigating
  • Merchant advised to contact Support directly or submit a report through the POS app for case tracking

Status: Known issue, no immediate fix or workaround provided. Requires individual case reporting for proper support and tracking.

When I scan a product the price initially shows the incorrect higher total with the vat added on, before reverting after a couple of seconds to include vat.

This is inconvenient when processing orders quickly as users can end up asking for the wrong total from the customer.

I have already updated my market settings to include vat and not use dynamic tax display.

See screenshot of tax settings and video showing the bug in action.

This is happening on two different iPads both running the latest iOS and POS Apps.

Has anybody else noticed this? Any idea of a fix or workaround?

Hey there @peterasmith,

This is Aaron from the Retail Team here at Shopify!

Thank you so much for sharing your question within our Shopify Community.

I completely understand how inconvenient this is for yourself, your business, and your customers. In-person checkouts should be a fast and seamless process, and I understand how the issue you are experiencing doesn’t correlate with that process.

The issue that you are experiencing is one that we, and our developers, are aware of. In order for us to provide you with the needed support, and to also report your case on our end, we would highly recommend reaching out to our Support team through one of the following methods.

Thanks,

Hi @peterasmith

This lag typically occurs when the POS recalculates the taxes after fetching the product information. A practical solution is to pre-load tax-inclusive pricing by duplicating the affected products into a VAT-inclusive price list using Shopify Markets and then sync them with POS. This causes the correct price to be loaded immediately on scan.

@SealSubs-Roan Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure I quite understand what you’re suggesting though. The products are already all in my primary market - United Kingdom, which is set up to have VAT-inclusive pricing. I’m not sure how I could set up another market in a different way?

If you could clarify this solution further I’d appreciate it.

Thanks

Peter
