POS UI Updates - Developers: why are you testing in prod?

Please stop pushing POS UI changes during business hours

Why, why, why are there constant UI updates to the Shopify POS during normal business hours?

For the sake of our collective sanity, please stop A/B testing on live, paying customers in production.

Over the past week alone we’ve experienced:

  • Customer-facing receipt screen changes that now require customers to scroll through receipt options. It seems minor, but it slows down checkout, creates unnecessary confusion, and we’ve already had multiple customers comment, “Ew… I really don’t like that.”
  • Cash balancing changes that now require manually typing the opening/closing register balance instead of offering quick options like $0.00, Default Register Balance, or Current Cash in Till.
  • Inconsistent workflows for adding multiple quantities after scanning a barcode. It feels like this behavior keeps changing, forcing staff to relearn muscle memory.
  • A redesigned cash change-due screen where the amount owed to the customer went from being large and immediately visible to a tiny green number buried in an already busy interface.

These aren’t improvements for stores trying to move customers through a checkout line. Every UI change interrupts employee workflow, slows transactions, and creates unnecessary friction for both staff and customers.

Meanwhile, the issues that actually impact daily operations continue to persist:

  • Bluetooth barcode scanners randomly disconnecting.
  • Wired POS hardware occasionally dropping connections.
  • Lag, freezes, and intermittent hardware communication issues.

If engineering resources are limited, I’d much rather see them spent on stability and reliability than on frequent interface redesigns.

My request to the Shopify POS team:

  1. Stop deploying UI experiments and workflow changes during business hours.
  2. Make major POS UI changes optional or behind a feature flag until merchants choose to adopt them.
  3. Publish clear release notes with screenshots before changes go live.
  4. Prioritize hardware reliability, connection stability, and performance over cosmetic UI updates.

Retail staff rely on muscle memory. Consistency and predictability matter far more than frequent visual refreshes. Please let merchants run their stores without having to relearn the checkout process every week.

Hey @SCGames .

Altering the POS system during business hours slows checkout and disorients staff. To fix this, merchants should control UI update timing, receive clear release notes, and hardware stability should be prioritized over cosmetic changes.

This is just a summary of what I’m stating above. This isn’t exactly constructive feedback. Thanks for bumping the thread a little though I guess.
