Could you help me determine if the email below is a scam? If it’s legitimate, how can I resolve the issue?
Topic summary
A user received a suspicious email claiming their account was blacklisted and sought verification of its legitimacy.
Verification guidance provided:
- Check the sender’s email domain carefully
- Legitimate Shopify emails only come from official domains: @shopify.com, @email.shopify.com, @em.shopify.com, and @shopify-billpay.melio.com
- Emails from public services (Gmail, Yahoo, Apple mail, Hotmail) are not from Shopify and should be treated as phishing attempts
Safety recommendations:
- Do not click links in suspicious emails
- Hover over links to inspect them before clicking
- Similar scam emails are commonly reported, often requesting payment for free themes
The user shared a screenshot of the sender’s email address for further verification, but the discussion remains open regarding whether this specific email is legitimate.
Hi @Lexietees
To determine if that is a scam just check the sender’s email, if it is from Gmail it is a scam.
Check
“Shopify will only send emails from official domains such as @shopify.com, @email.shopify.com, @em.shopify.com, and @shopify-billpay.melio.com. Emails from public email services such as Gmail, Yahoo, Apple mail, or Hotmail aren’t from Shopify and should be treated as potential phishing attempts.”
If you search here or just Google you will find hundreds of topics with similar emails, like trying to pay for a free theme and so on.
It is also important to not click any links in those emails, check them out by just hovering.
Stay safe.
