I would like a text field at checkout where the customer can leave me a message.
Is this possible?
If you’re on Shopify Plus, then yes you can edit the checkout area and have a notes box.
If you’re not on Plus, you still have the option but you’ll have to put it outside of the checkout - cart page is the most common area for this. If you need help from a developer to add this feature feel free to contact my team at speedboostr.com/contact, we build features like this all the time.
Before you hire a developer though, first check in the Customize Theme section and navigate to the cart page in there to see if it’s an option offered by your theme. It’s a fairly common feature so you might already have it available in your theme options.

At this time you can’t add this to the checkout pages due to the higher security there for the protection of customer’s payment information and details.
However, you can add the order notes to the cart page. It’ll leave a box field in the cart available for customers to add any specific notes you’d like.
Another option is to use a product options app to collect details on each product. For example, if you customize each product with colors, engravings, and many other options you can have your customer make those choices before they get to the checkout. Same with any product note details you need.
Will your notes be related to the product details or will the note be needed for something different?
