Prevent order if it is below a certain amount

I would like to prevent a customer from making a purchase if it is below a certain amount.

What approach would you take?

Hey @igreisman ,

Thanks for your question!

Setting a minimum order amount in your store can be accomplished without any coding or apps by simply adjusting your shipping settings.

We have a comprehensive guide written by a fellow Shopify community superstar right here: How To Establish A Minimum Order Value? This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to adjust your shipping settings to implement a minimum order value effectively.

This method will prevent customers from proceeding to checkout if their order total is below the minimum amount you’ve set, as no shipping rates will be available.

However, this approach might confuse customers if they don’t understand why there are no available shipping rates. To prevent this confusion, it’s important to clearly communicate your minimum order amount policy. Here are a few tips on how to do this effectively:

  • Homepage Banner: Use a banner on your homepage to announce the minimum order amount. Make sure it’s in a prominent place where visitors can easily see it.

  • Product Pages: Mention the minimum order amount on all product pages. You could include this information in the product description or as a note near the ‘Add to Cart’ button.

  • Cart Page: Add a note on the cart page that informs customers about the minimum order amount. This way, they’ll be reminded before proceeding to checkout.

  • FAQs and Policies: Include the minimum order amount in your FAQs and shipping policies. This will serve as a reference point for customers who look for more detailed information.

  • Email Communications: If you have a mailing list, send out an email to your customers informing them about the change in policy.

By clearly communicating this policy across your website and through customer communications, you can ensure a smooth shopping experience for your customers.

Let me know if I can clarify anything further! All the best,

Unfortunately, this does not work since we do not ship.

Hi, you can use our free app “PayMix” to hide all the payment methods when the cart amount is below the certain amount.

Ah I see! If you don’t ship products and your business model is based on in-store pickup or digital products, the shipping settings method wouldn’t be applicable. Shopify doesn’t currently have a built-in feature to enforce a minimum order amount for these scenarios.

In this case, you may need to look at installing an app designed for this purpose. Apps like Order Minimums & Limits or MinCart can help enforce minimum order amounts. These apps allow you to set minimum or maximum limits for orders, products, or variants, and they work regardless of whether you’re shipping physical goods or selling digital products.

Let me know how you get on!

Well, you can use PayRules: Hide Payment Methods app to prevent a customer from making a purchase below a certain amount. For instance, you can hide all your payment methods if the cart amount does not meet the minimum amount. These are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Choose all the payment options from the Select payment methods field.
  2. If you don’t find any payment options in the above field, write your payment name in the Additional payment methods field.
  3. Set the MIN amount (1000 for example) on the Cart subtotal field.

Now if a customer’s cart is below a certain amount (in our case it’s 1000), they will no longer see the payment options on the checkout page thus they won’t be able to make the order.

Hello Moira, the link is not there anymore.
