Price Rounding in the US for USD

Hi there! I had my first cash sale using the Shopify POS (lite) this week. The order ended up being $20.13 after taxes. However, pennies are being deprecated here in the US. I tried to look at the Price-rounding settings for the US market. A lot of documentation says it’s not enabled, but my drop-down claims it’s already rounding to the nearest $1.00.

However, from this transaction, nothing was rounded at any point --before nor after taxes.

This is a bookstore. There is too much inventory variation and turn-over for some type of workaround. Cash rounding needs to be systemically built-in and working for USD.

Also, I don’t see a place for Shopify bug reports, so into the community forums this goes, I guess.

The price rounding setting applies to currency-converted prices in foreign markets only. It does not round base currency prices and has no effect on USD transactions in a single-market US store.

It’s no longer being manufactured, but there are still over 100 billion pennies in circulation. If you don’t want to provide a lot of change, then change your prices so the end will be closer to the dollar mark. It’s not hard.

Hi @mbowen314

This is actually a known limitation, not a bug.

You can check the Shopify documentation here:

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/sell-in-person/shopify-pos/cash-rounding-on-pos

The US is currently not included in the supported countries list.

A couple of things that may help clarify this:

  • The “round to nearest $1.00” setting in Markets is only for storefront price display (for example showing $20 instead of $19.99). It does not control cash rounding in Shopify POS.
  • Cash rounding only works during checkout after selecting “Cash” as the payment method. Since USD is not supported, no rounding will happen even if the Markets setting is enabled.

For bug reports or feature requests, the best option is to contact Shopify Support through the Shopify Help Center and ask them to submit it to the POS product team.

“The “round to nearest $1.00” setting in Markets is only for storefront price display (for example showing $20 instead of $19.99). It does not control cash rounding in Shopify POS.” is the only useful thing in your post. Not a solution, but at least addresses what comes off as a discrepancy.

I do bookstore pop-ups. This means I have state, county and sometimes even town-specific taxes which change with every pop-up. On top of that, a large and highly-rotating set of SKUs (i.e. a lot of different inventory items, not just a lot of the same inventory). I am not going to adjust the base price of each and every book I take to each and every pop-up in each and every town.

Additionally, I confirmed my bank is not providing the shop pennies for the cash drawer to provide change to customers. It doesn’t matter if there are “100 billion” in circulation if they’re not within my part of the ecosystem. Customers are also not paying with pennies so I don’t get a source there, either. Your comment is unhelpful and does not address the Shopify aspect of this problem --which is why I am on the Shopify forum asking about this.

If you want to reach out to Shopify, you can do that directly. This forum will in no way solve your issue. In the meantime, I would suggest a different bank. They are not all refusing pennies lol. There are thousands and thousands of businesses giving change, most likely right around you. You can ask around. If this is truly a problem (it isn’t) they can tell you which bank or what to do. Sorry you think this is such a big issue. You should really take this up with Shopify.

I actually just contacted Shopify Support and immediately inquired about the Price Rounding feature and that I heard it was in an early opt-in phase and they confirmed such and immediately activated it on my account.

If you need to support cash rounding at POS level then you should check out Rounderz which is super cheap to run until native Shopify rounding comes out.

Hey @mbowen314

hope you’re doing well!

That does sound like a bug. Cash rounding for USD POS transactions should apply automatically if it’s supported. I’d report it to Shopify support they can confirm whether it’s a known issue or a configuration problem.
