I am planning to create an e-commerce website for a nonprofit organization (NPO) and have a few questions. Will I be able to fully customize the web application based on our specific needs? Additionally, considering we currently have around 5,000–6,000 users, with the possibility of growing to 10,000 in the future, what would be the estimated cost for customizing the application and managing the user base?
Hi @Sainadh243
Your target look great! Please tell me what you want to customize on your store, I can do follow your requirement.
I also providing the discount app solution so don’t worry about store buidling.
Hi @Sainadh243 merchants can customize themes to the exent of the capabilities the apis allows and that merchants budget allows for custom work.

Recognize questions like that are next to useless, they are incredibly loaded and ambiguous lacking critical detail.
It’s basically asking if one platform can do everything for everyone.
Vague “can I do every X?” which will get vague “you can do anything” answers trying to make a sale or get an upvote.
Then you will migrate, then later realize you can’t do X then say “I was told I could do X”
That’s a good way to burn a lot of money, Avoid this business cliché like the plague be upfront and clear.
If you have specific needs you need to improve your communication to lower the risk of a failed project and budget:
- show your work: research of each need then specifically list requirements along with clarifying questions
- or contact shopify support and do rounds with them, being aware the chatbot or t0 support is not the same as deep expertise
- or IF an enterprise looking to get a shopifyPlus plan then contact Plus sales team with caveat being they are trying to make a sale.
- or hire a shopify partner to do discovery to validate technical requirements
We need a search bar with filters for size, type, brand, and status. . When an item is added to the cart, a timer should temporarily hold the item; if the purchase isn’t completed within the time limit, it should return to Available status.
The cart should include “Continue Shopping” and “Checkout” options. At checkout, users must create an account (or log in) and provide Recipient information (diagnosis, age, etc.) for each transaction to support grant reporting.
Each item added to the cart must have a checkbox to acknowledge the waiver. Ideally, users sign the waiver once during account creation, with each cart item providing a checkbox and an optional link to review the waiver.
This is our initial requirement, but we anticipate that future enhancements may be needed as our needs grow. Can I design the application for this requirements using Shopify? If yes, could you also share the estimated costs for designing and maintaining the application? Please provide a cost analysis if you are familiar with it.
Thank you so much for your help! If you don’t mind, could you please share how much Shopify charges you for your website and how much it cost to hire a good specialist?
Here is our initial Requirement !

Yes, I would appreciate your help in getting a more accurate estimate for
the exact setup cost and ongoing maintenance. Could you assist me with
that?
Hi @Sainadh243
A) These are native behaviors either on the platform, or in themes:
- a search bar with filters for size, type, brand, and status
- The cart should include “Continue Shopping” and “Checkout” options.
- At checkout, users must create an account (or log in)
#1 and #2 will vary wildly in looks or wording based on theme being used or customization investment.
For thins like #3 customer accounts, see the help manual https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/customers/customer-accounts
B) These are not generally available and require either specific themes or customization of themes or apps:
- “. . When an item is added to the cart, a timer should temporarily hold the item; if the purchase isn’t completed within the time limit, it should return to Available status.”
- “At checkout, users must create an account (or log in) and provide Recipient information (diagnosis, age, etc.) for each transaction to support grant reporting.”
- “Each item added to the cart must have a checkbox to acknowledge the waiver. Ideally, users sign the waiver once during account creation, with each cart item providing a checkbox and an optional link to review the waiver.”
Shopify does not have an cart item que’ing system and finding or building an app for that is a big project in an off itself.
Note: cart is NOT the same as checkout avoid using terms interchangeably.
Customizing the checkout to have custom form inputs has limitations only available for Shopify Plus Enterprise plans. See checkout blocks for shopify’s free app that may facilitate this for Plus plan. Most stores should try to collect this info prior to checkout using cart attributes or line-item-propertys via theme customizations or apps.
Some themes have an agree-to-terms checkbox but often needs to be done custom.
A store setup for A1-3 & with customizations B3 could be as low as a couple hundred depending on who you work with and scope of setup.
