Problem submiting sitemap.xml on google search console

Hello! Im getting the error 404, couldnt fetch, im doing the steps correctly, first verified the ownership with an html tag and confirm, then entering sitemap.xml correctly typed , im using the free subdomain mystore.myshopify.com, and recently removed the store password if that info helps. Thank you in advance.

Hey @vmms24 ,

Great question!

I have come across this issue a few times, here are the steps of what worked to resolve the error:

  • Install a custom domain to your site first, then after you can reach the site map at your new domain yourself, submit the site map again to Google. You’ll want a custom to improve the professionalism of your store as well.
  • After submitting your sitemap (using a custom domain), you still might see the “Could Not Fetch” error on Google Search Console. Try writing a short blog post and publishing it (you can delete it later, it’s only temporary). Shopify includes a link to your News blog by default in the sitemap but somehow Google can’t read the sitemap if there aren’t any posts and the News blog is an empty page.

Let me know how you get on!

Thanks for your responde, ill try, does that mean the sitemaps wont work with the default domain?

@vmms24

Yes, you are correct! Having a custom domain seems to resolve this error.

Hi,

Your sitemap url should be like this https://www.storename.com/sitemap.xml
