Procesing changes in POS?

Hello,

I was just made aware that one the of the most basic features of a POS software was not available unless you had a $89 USD subscription for each store: a client cannot change a clothing item that did not fit unless you have POS Pro.

I was sold by a Shopify sales associate that this was a complete retail software, and that Pro was to add extra features. However, you cannot say that this is a “bonus” feature! It’s basic for any retail business! Seriously disapointed.

I hope the Shopify staff will escalate this issue and make this available as part of the basic Shopify POS features. I even have an idea for you $$$: make the “change between stores” a POS Pro feature!

Hi @Emaya

It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating situation, and I totally get where you’re coming from. When you signed up for Shopify POS, you were under the impression that the standard plan covered all the essential retail functions—like processing simple exchanges when a customer needs a different size. Finding out that this feature is locked behind the POS Pro plan at $89 per month per location is understandably disappointing, especially since exchanges are a fundamental part of running a retail store.

What You Can Do About It

While I can’t change Shopify’s pricing structure, I can suggest a few workarounds to help you process exchanges without upgrading to POS Pro:

1-Process a Return & New Purchase- Instead of an actual exchange, process a refund for the original item and then ring up a new sale for the correct size.

  • This is the most common workaround, but it does require the customer to go through a two-step process.

2-Issue a Store Credit or Gift Card- If your business allows store credit, refund the original item onto a Shopify Gift Card and let the customer use it to buy the correct item.

  • This keeps the money in your business while giving customers flexibility.

3-Manual Discounting for Exchanges- If the customer is exchanging for an item of the same value, you can manually apply a discount to make the price match.

  • Example: If they bought a $50 shirt and need a different size, refund the first item and apply a $50 discount to the replacement item.

4-Consider POS Lite if You’re Mostly Online- If your retail sales are secondary to your online store, POS Lite may still work for you with these workarounds.

  • However, if you run a high-volume retail store, POS Pro is the only way to get a seamless exchange workflow.

Your Feedback is 100% Valid

I completely agree that exchanges are a core retail function and shouldn’t be behind a paywall. Many users in the Shopify Community feel the same way, and I recommend submitting feedback directly to Shopify via the Support Team or the Shopify Feature Request Forum. The more merchants voice this issue, the better chance Shopify will reconsider.

If you need any other assistance, feel free to reply and I will try my best to help.
Best regards,
Daisy
