Product import issues: You need to add option values for Title

I have been trying to sort this for weeks! I have tried everything suggested on this forum already with no luck.

Please could somebody take a look at my import spreadsheet and tell me what our issues are?

Thanks for providing a link to your CSV file here and for outlining the errors you have been seeing.

I can see at least a few examples where there is an entry under the ‘handle’ field that does not have any accompanying info under the ‘title’ column:

Similarly, further down in the file we see missing info under the Option 1 Name and Option 1 Value fields:

It is important when working with CSV files to ensure that the file format is matched exactly and that all necessary fields have data entered.

You can read a bit more about each of the fields in this format here and you can even click on the link on that guide to download a sample CSV file format to refer to.

Go through your CSV file, ensure that the formatting is exactly correct and try importing it again.

It might help if you divide your catalog up into parts so that you can work on correctly importing each part as you go.

Hi @Don

Thanks for your reply. In your first example. There is no title because this is a row for using a second image for the same product. Therefore in row 139 there is just the same handle as 138, but a different image URL.

What is the correct way of doing this?

Sorry I didn’t get back to you here before now.

If you just wish to add more product images via CSV file then the extra lines you are referring to here need to only have the handle and image src fields filled out (image alt text is optional) as per our guide to using CSV files.

No other fields are required here, so any other info you would have entered on these lines will cause issues as we have seen here.

Try removing all data entered for lines being used to add images to your product except for the handle and image src fields as outlined on our guide above.

Something is incorrect with this, as when we do our initial uploads with multiple pic urls, most uptake just fine without issue using only title and urls, but “reupload checking the overwrite box” to correct and backfill any issues, such as upload pic urls that may have timed out, it returns failures with ‘You need to add option values for Title’ . We tried additional pics with only title and url, also tried using only handle and urls, both return the same result and do not upload the additional pic files as well, why?

I am having the same problems when trying to reupload my products. The creation of the product was fine, but when reuploading them, it returns failures with ‘You need to add option values for Title’. Did you find any solution for this problem?

Ah I got the answer!

Weird that you have to do this but under “Option 1 Name” you have to enter: Title

Under “Option 1 Value” you have to enter: Default Title

Save the file and then upload and select overwrite - it should go through without error.

Hi Everyone,

I am having a similar issue- we are doing a price update of all of our products and their variants. I thought I kept only relevant columns in my csv (since all we are changing is prices), but I am getting the error message “ignored because it did not contain product data”. There are product titles missing on certain rows because they are variants of the same product, and this is how the product list exported from Shopify.

Any insight would be helpful!

Big thanks to Talk19 for an answer that works. For items that simply have NO variants, it’s unclear how to handle the import errors stating “Line : You need to add option values for Title”. The answer above works. If you provide “Title” for the option name and the actual title value for the option value, it shows an unsightly, unprofessional, non-variant.

Why these goofy values are required and simply not being able to leave these columns blank is beyond me here two full years later.
