I have a product that cannot be tagged in Shop App posts and I can’t figure out why. The product is published on Shop and all of my other sales channels. It is in stock and visible on my site. I can’t find anything that is different about this product compared to others that can be tagged.
When I try to tag the category it’s in (it is the only product in that category) it says “0 eligible products” but doesn’t say anywhere why the product isn’t eligible. How do I make the product eligible to tag?
Based on Shopify’s documentation, there are a few specific requirements a product must meet to be eligible for tagging in Shop posts — and one of them is often easy to miss.
For a product to be taggable in the Shop App, it needs to have all three of the following:
At least one image
A price
A product category is assigned
That last one is usually the main issue. Even if your product is already added to a collection, that’s not enough. It also needs a Shopify product category (the standardized taxonomy), not just a custom “Product type” or collection.
To check this:
Go to the product page in Shopify
Scroll down to the Product organization section
Look for the Category field (this is different from “Product type”)
If it’s empty or not set properly, assign the correct category and save
You should also double-check a few other things:
The product isn’t in a restricted category for Shop
It’s published to the Online Store (and synced with Shop)
There are no issues with variants or pricing that might make the product seem incomplete
In most cases like yours, the missing or incorrect product category is the reason it shows 0 eligible products.
Thank you, I checked the category and discovered that the automatically assigned category was under alcohol, which is incorrect. Hopefully, choosing a new category will fix the problem.
