In the media section of a product page, I’ve changed the images which were created through the Shopify/Whitewall integration, adding three configurations and three different sizes of the product (so in total 9 images). Before changing them, the images on the product page change in sync with the choosen options, like size or framing (for a wallprint).
After I’ve changed the images to my own custom ones (with different interior backgrounds), there is no interaction anymore with the choosen option. Every option just shows all 9 available pictures.
Is there a way to assign a order and exclusivity to a certain option?
What you’re describing happens because the original Whitewall integration was using variant-specific media, meaning each option (size, frame, etc.) had its own assigned images.
When you replaced the images manually, Shopify no longer knows which image belongs to which variant so it shows all 9 images for every option.
Yes, you can absolutely fix this.
How to Assign Images to Specific Options (Variant Media)
Shopify lets you connect certain images to specific variants so the gallery updates when someone selects:
a size
a frame
or any other option
Here’s how to do it:
Go to Products → open your product
Scroll to the Variants section
Click a variant (e.g. “40x60 / Black frame”)
On the right side, assign the images that belong ONLY to that variant
Repeat this for each variant and save
Once done, Shopify will automatically show the correct images based on the selected option.
Important Note
If your 9 images represent 3 backgrounds × 3 sizes, or any similar combination, make sure each variant only gets the 3 images that match that exact option.
Do you understand this, or would you like me to break it down even more simply?
Shopify only swaps media on variant change if each image is explicitly assigned to a specific variant. In the product editor, open each variant and attach only the images that belong to that size/framing. Had to redo this on a client build recently, once the images were linked per-variant, the gallery synced again.
Since we’re at it. For every variant the product page shows the variant image and the main image. Would it be possible to show more images per variant, only visible to that variant? E.g. a close up of the variant frame of my product.
Yes, you can absolutely show multiple images for each variant so that only the selected variant displays its own set of photos.
Shopify supports variant-specific media, which means you can assign more than one image to a single variant. When that variant is selected on the product page, only the images linked to it will appear in the gallery.
You just need to assign every image you want to each variant individually, and they’ll switch automatically when the customer selects that option.
If you don’t understand any part of this, I would love to explain it more clearly.
Great to hear you’ve successfully assigned your first image to a variant. To add a second (or multiple) images, here’s how to do it
1. Upload all the images you want to use
Go to Products (Select Product) Media and upload all your additional images
2. Assign multiple images to a variant
Scroll down to the Variants section and click Edit on the variant.
In the Media section, click Add media.
Select any additional images you want linked to that specific variant.
Save your changes.
3. Confirm the variant gallery is active
Shopify now allows a “variant-specific media gallery,” so once images are assigned, only those selected images will show when the customer switches variants.
If you’d like, I can also guide you on customizing how the variant gallery displays on your theme.
Because it’s bot responses telling you what you want to hear not reality.
Multi-image variant media is not supported natively in shopify.
Most merchants just cheap out and use an app to try and bridge the gap.
