Product type missing from Default Product List

Topic summary

A merchant is seeking to restore the “Product Type” column to Shopify’s default product list view, which disappeared after a recent update. They rely on this field to track products through their preparation pipeline (e.g., “to shoot,” “to type description,” “to measure”) before going live.

Current Issue:

  • Product Type column removed from default view
  • Significant unused space remains on the product list page
  • No standard columns like SKU or price visible by default

Workarounds Discussed:

  • Metafields were suggested but rejected—the merchant’s product types change too frequently to justify constant metafield updates
  • Hextom Bulk Product Editor mentioned as a potential tool, though the merchant expresses concern about its complexity

Status: The discussion remains unresolved. The merchant hopes Shopify will restore the column given the available screen space, but is exploring third-party apps as an interim solution.

Is there a way to add product type back to the default view in the product list? Product type is the only field where merchants can enter a custom label. We depend on this as a default column. It dissapear with the last update. Currently, there is a ton of wasted real estate on the product view page. You would think there would be a sku or price column, or at least the custom product type column. Is there an app that can add this to the product page list?

Thank you for reply! I currently utilize metafields across my store.
Problem is: My product types are constantly changing due to where the products are in my pipeline in preparation to go live. “To shoot, to type the description, to measure, ect” To create a custom MF for these products would produce a need to modify/ edit all the time. Does not seem worth the trouble.
I would like the product types to be in the list. I hear no, not possible. Unless they bring it back….
Please recommend an app!

Thx again. I am familiar with hextom bulk product editor. Powerful tools / dangerous tools for someone who sucks at rules.
I am thinking with all the wasted real estate in the product list, they just may add it back.
Until them I will look into managing with an app. Thx Daniel.
