PSA for Shopify Merchants Who Use FedEx Through Shopify Shipping ![]()
I want to share my recent experience because it will absolutely affect other business owners who rely on expedited shipping.
I purchased three FedEx expedited labels through Shopify, each showing a 1–2 day delivery timeframe with a high shipping cost. Two shipments were delayed, and one was returned as “undeliverable.” When I filed a claim, I learned something I had never been told at checkout:
FedEx does NOT honor their normal delivery guarantee when the label is purchased through Shopify.
Late deliveries through Shopify’s FedEx integration are NOT eligible for reimbursement — at all.
Shopify expects merchants to find this information buried in a Help Center article, even though it is NOT shown during the label purchase process.
For context, FedEx normally guarantees Priority Overnight delivery, including a money-back guarantee if it arrives late. But Shopify’s agreement with FedEx eliminates that guarantee and does not disclose this at checkout when you’re choosing a shipping service and paying for speed.
Shopify’s response was essentially:
-
They cannot escalate the issue.
-
They do not offer supervisors for review.
-
They cannot credit the shipment.
-
FedEx won’t allow them to file a late claim.
-
It’s the merchant’s “responsibility” to already know Shopify voids FedEx guarantees.
Meanwhile, UPS purchased through Shopify does honor late-delivery claims making this discrepancy even more confusing.
As a business owner, this is unacceptable. Merchants deserve clear disclosure before choosing a carrier, especially when the cost is based on expedited service. I absolutely understand that Shopify may have different agreements with each carrier. That’s their business. But Shopify does control how these FedEx shipping options are displayed and sold on their platform.
I will be reaching out to FedEx directly as well, because Shopify is advertising delivery expectations that FedEx does not stand behind in this setup and merchants are the ones who take the financial hit.
Sharing this so other Shopify sellers don’t get blindsided the way I did.
We all rely on accurate shipping information — and transparency matters.
