Purchase a domain name with Shopify. Is personal information on WhoIs Lookup hidden or public?

When purchasing my domain with Shopify, will my personal information be hidden from public view when performing a WhoIs Lookup?

Wix hides your information.

Hi @PointlessThorns ,

Ted here from Shopify, thanks for posting your query.

Great question! Yes, WHOIS privacy is provided for most common domain extensions such as .com or .biz for example, but it’s not provided for all domain extensions. More info can be found under “WHOIS Exceptions” in this guide if you would like to take a look. In addition, if you check out the video tutorial in the same guide, around the 2:36 mark, you’ll see an example of how the checkout process works when buying a domain with Shopify and if WHOIS privacy is provided for that particular domain or not. I’ve included a screenshot example below too:

Have you a store with Shopify at the moment or are you looking to join? If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know, I’m happy to help!

Many thanks,

Ted,

Thanks for your reply. Consider this one complete.

My last starter site was with Wix. I am very happy with it but it is not for large scale e-commerce.

This one will be larger and I need Shopify to handle it.

We are getting some details finalized, we will use Shopify to purchase the domain (.com) name, we will purchase a template, we will use Shopify in conjunction with a dropship.

Thanks

Hi Ted, I have a domain already that I recently purchased and I did not turn off the WHOIS thing so I get unsolicited “do you want to fix your webpage” messages all the time. Can I turn it off somehow after the fact, or do I have to make a new domain? Thanks, A

Hey, @newbie12 !

I’m jumping in here to help out Ted. I’d love to help you with your concern!

You can make your domain details private if you have a type of domain that offers WHOIS privacy. All domains other than the ones listed on this page have this option.

If you find that your domain offers WHOIS privacy, you can activate it by editing your domain contact information. You may follow the guide below to make your information private.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
  2. Click the domain name.
  3. Click Domain settings > Edit contact information.
  4. You may edit the details if you wish. If not, you can go ahead and select whether you want your contact information to be private or public.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Check the email account that’s associated with your domain for a confirmation email. The email message varies, but you might need to do one of the following:
    • Click a link and follow the instructions that are provided to accept your changes.
    • Fill out a form and submit it to Shopify Support to update your contact information.

Feel free to send a response back if you have questions about the above. For other concerns, you may create a new post.

Hi Summer,

Thanks for the response! I went and checked the contact information, and it is in fact marked private already. Is there somewhere else I should look?
