Purchasing a premium theme for a partner-created store before transferring ownership

Hi everyone,

I’m a Shopify Partner running an agency and I’ve created a store for a client using my Partner account (development store). The store has not yet been transferred to the client, as the website work is still in progress.

My question is about purchasing a premium theme from the Shopify Theme Store:

  • The client wants to pay for and own the premium theme

  • The store is currently under my Partner account

  • I understand that theme licenses are tied to the store owner

Is there any way for the client to purchase and install a premium theme into the store without transferring store ownership first?
Or is transferring the store to the client a mandatory step before a paid theme can be purchased and published?

I want to make sure the theme license is correctly owned by the client and remains fully supported.

Transferring the store first is the recommended approach if you require the client to own the theme license directly. When you purchase a theme from the Shopify Theme Store, that theme is licensed exclusively to the store where the purchase was made.
