Question: What's your BIGGEST complaint about your current COD verification app? (e.g., Phone Verify, Risksumo)

Hey everyone,

This is a specific question for merchants shipping to India, Southeast Asia, or the Middle East where Cash on Delivery (COD) is essential.

We all know COD is a necessary evil—it can bring in 80% of sales. But the fake orders and RTO (Return-to-Origin) shipping costs are an absolute nightmare that can kill a small business.

To fight this, I know many of us are paying for apps like “Phone Verify Secure COD,” “Risksumo,” “Blockify,” or other OTP verification tools.

My question is: If you are paying for one of these apps, what is your single biggest frustration with it?

I’m asking because I’m finding the current options painful. Is it…

  1. The Price? (e.g., $12.99+/month seems too high for a simple OTP check.)

  2. The Complexity? (Are they bloated with features I don’t need, like IP blocking, risk scores, etc.? I just want to verify a phone number.)

  3. Missing Features? (e.g., No WhatsApp OTP support, which is critical in my market.)

  4. Bad Setup/Support? (Was it a pain to install or get working with the checkout?)

  5. Something else? (Please tell me!)

Full transparency: I’m a developer, and I’m so frustrated with the options that I’m considering building a super-lightweight, low-cost (maybe $4.99/mo) app that only does one thing: SMS & WhatsApp OTP verification for COD orders.

I’d be grateful for any rants or feedback you have on the tools you’re already using. What do you hate about them?

Thanks!

Genuine feedback from someone who’s spent a fair amount of time in this space:

The WhatsApp OTP gap is probably the most legitimate technical complaint. SMS delivery in India especially has gotten worse - carriers throttle transactional messages from unknown senders, and a huge chunk of customers in tier 2/3 cities just don’t check SMS. WhatsApp is where people actually respond. If an app is SMS-only, you’re probably looking at 60-70% actual verification rates at best, which starts to undermine the whole point.

Pricing frustration is real but has some nuance. Part of the cost in these apps isn’t pure margin - SMS gateway fees are not trivial at scale. If you’re thinking $4.99/month, it’s worth working out whether that’s sustainable once a merchant is doing 300-500 COD orders/month. Some apps handle this with usage-based charges on top of a base fee, which is more honest but harder to predict.

On the ““bloat”” issue: worth noting that tools like Blockify are actually solving a different layer of the problem - they’re focused on blocking suspicious traffic before an order is placed (by IP, VPN, geography, etc.) rather than OTP verification after. Merchants sometimes bundle them together without realizing the overlap isn’t really overlap - one is upstream prevention, the other is intent confirmation. Doesn’t make either less frustrating to set up, but it’s a reason why a pure OTP tool and a blocking tool can actually coexist without redundancy.

If you do build this: WhatsApp primary with SMS fallback, minimal setup, and pricing that’s either flat-low or transparent usage-based would address the complaints I hear most consistently. The hard part will be the Meta Business verification requirements to use the WhatsApp Business API legitimately - that process alone trips up a lot of developers and delays launches by weeks.
