Topic summary
A retired seller on a fixed income seeks guidance on monetizing a large collection of numismatic coins (collectible), including complete sets and pre‑1933 gold, after limited success on eBay and concerns about fees and scammers.
Advice offered: eBay is the best venue for this category; its fees are tied to the significant exposure and reach auctions receive. A standalone Shopify store would likely require 10–20× more ad spend and still not match eBay’s audience.
Clarifications:
- Numismatic coins: collectible coins valued for rarity, history, or condition.
- Pre‑33 gold: U.S. gold coins minted before 1933, often sought by collectors.
Outcome: No concrete action plan or tools provided; the recommendation is to continue with eBay despite fee concerns.
Open/Unresolved:
- How to reduce scam risk and manage fees on eBay.
- Whether alternative marketplaces, authentication services, or consignment options could balance safety and costs.

Hi Bobe,
In all honestly, Ebay is your best bet for that sort of thing. The fees they make you pay are for the exposure your auctions will get.
If you go with a shopify page, you would spend 10-20 times more on ads and still not achieve the same reach that Ebay does.
