SUMMARY: The ability to rearrange the list of items in each order by our product SKU - in alphanumeric order.
By default, the list of items in each order is arranged in the same sequence that the customer placed them in their cart.
But when it’s time for fulfillment staff to pick those items, that particular order is inefficient for our warehouse layout.
I’d like to have the ability to rearrange the list by our product SKU - in alphanumeric order. It seems my options are:
Download the orders into excel and rearrange the list, then print from there - which is undesirable for a variety of reasons that make this workaround more work than it saves.
Use an add-on app. Of the apps I’ve looked at, they offer many other features, none of which I want, I just need this one function.
I am apprehensive to add more apps to my shop for just one feature. I already have trouble managing the integration of the other handful of apps that I have.
I would love it if Shopify could add this feature.
Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t currently support rearranging pick lists by SKU natively. For now, the only available options are to use a fulfillment app or export the pick list and sort it externally.
To request a new feature in Shopify, I recommend reaching out to their support team so they can pass your feedback along to the Shopify developers for future consideration.

I completely agree with this. The order items make sense for customers, but for fulfillment and picking, that order is not efficient at all. Sorting items by SKU in alphanumeric order would save time and reduce errors in the warehouse.
Right now, downloading to Excel or installing another app just for this one feature feels unnecessary. A simple built-in option to reorder items by SKU would be extremely helpful for day to day operations. Hopefully, Shopify considers adding this feature.
For an immediate solution you can do things like this with Order Automator. It handles various order management tasks, and is customizable.
For example in this case you can have it send an order notification email, attach the packing slip, but have the line items in alphabetical order. It’s designed to save time and expand Shopify store functionality, exact use cases like this.

But I have not tried it for something like this as building a print-queue or creating PDF’s etc might be a bit to advanced.
I mention it because of your blurb about having trouble juggling multiple apps, in some cases this might be an out for some merchants in similar situations. <— READ: this is a time cost AI is not magic, delegate responsibly.
The api is there for merchant to use to build custom solutions.
Off-the-shelf apps are great for prototyping but you will keep paying an opportunity cost penalty by not streamlining operations where possible.
The batch printing function of 4Seller supports summing up the number of SKUs in all orders, so that warehouse staff can pick goods in a centralized manner. Or you can search in the Shopify app store.
