Refund after changing merchant bank account

I changed my bank as an order was fulfilled and now I need to refund the customer order was returned). Can I refund the order, or should I enter my new checking account number first?

Using Third-Party Payment Gateway

If you haven’t changed the bank account linked to your payment gateway yet, then it probably makes sense to do the refund first, so that the refund is deducted from the bank account that the payout was sent to. However, you should be able to still refund the order, even after switching bank accounts – it’ll just be deducted from the new bank account.

Using Shopify Payments

If you’re using Shopify Payments and you issue a refund, then the amount is deducted from your next available payout. So if you switch which bank account you’re using, then issue the refund, it won’t deduct from your old bank account – you’ll just receive less money on your next payout for future orders you receive (which’ll go to the new bank account).
