Report a fraud shopify store

Topic summary

A customer ordered two suits from a Shopify store (sayaa.shop) but received old, used shirts instead. They paid cash-on-delivery (COD) through a courier service, which eliminates chargeback protection typically available with credit card purchases.

Key Issue:
The customer is attempting to report the fraudulent merchant through Shopify’s official reporting tool but encounters a signature validation error. The form requires the signature to match their full name exactly.

Suggested Solutions:

  • For COD orders, the only fraud prevention is inspecting packages before payment at delivery
  • The signature error likely stems from formatting issues with the entered name
  • Community members suggest checking for extra spaces in the name field or including middle names if applicable
  • One user resolved the identical error by adjusting spacing in their name entry

Status: The fraud report remains unsubmitted due to the technical form issue. No resolution has been reached regarding the fraudulent order or refund.

Hi @imhassan0005

First of all, sorry to hear that you received a sub-par product that you spent your hard earned dollars for. But the good news is it sounds like you have a strong case for winning a chargeback with the bank that issued your credit card.

When you contact your bank, they’ll ask you the reason for your chargeback, the most close reason for your case is “Goods/Services Not as Described”. This means that the goods are not as advertised, and the evidence you shared can be included in your dispute to help strengthen your case.

The process of disputing a transaction is called a chargeback. A chargeback is when the customer claims with their credit card’s bank that the transaction was fraudulent, or the good was never received.

However, please note there’s a window of time where you can issue a chargeback - typically 30 to 60 days from purchase, depending on the bank that issued your credit card. So you’ll need to act sooner than later when filing a chargeback.

Please contact your bank to learn how to file a chargeback, and provide as much evidence to them as you can for your dispute for the highest chance of winning the chargeback and having your money returned in full.

Remember, Shopify is a marketplace. They perform some KYC (Know Your Customer) processes on merchants when they sign up, however there are occasions where merchants don’t act in good faith. They rely on customers like you to report bad acting merchants here: https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/report-a-merchant

Hi @dylanpierce , actually there was no bank option the only option was cash on delivery via courier service, and I tried to do report but facing issue in signature , eve I am writing same the user name according but it’s giving error and not proceeds forward.

Oh I’m sorry, I assumed you paid with credit card.

That’s really unfortunate, of course there is no chargeback protection when it comes to COD (Cash on Delivery) orders. The only way to prevent fraud in that case is inspect the packages in person when it’s delivered before payment.

I tried to do report but facing issue in signature , eve I am writing same the user name according but it’s giving error and not proceeds forward.

I’m sorry, I’m not quite following what the problem is. Could you explain further or share a screenshot of the error you’re seeing and link to the page?

I hope by seeing these 2 snapshots you got my point where I am facing issue.

Thanks for sharing @imhassan0005

The error message is: Signature must match your full name.

This leads me to believe you’ve set your full name somewhere, either at the top of this report form or as a part of your Shopify account.

Perhaps when you recording your full name, it included your middle name as well? Perhaps try including that if you have a middle name.

I had the same problem, it was my name that had an extra space.

so my name: “FirstName SecondName” I had to add an extra space to make it “FirstName SecondName” and then it worked.
