resend emails to abandoned checkout customers

Topic summary

A user fixed their abandoned checkout email automation flow but needs to reach customers who were missed before the correction. The issue is that Shopify doesn’t display a manual “Send email” button for these past abandoned checkouts—only a Flow button that redirects to the automation settings.

Key limitation identified:
Shopify doesn’t allow retroactive triggering of Flow emails. Once an abandoned checkout is processed (even if the email failed), it cannot be manually resent through the platform.

Suggested workarounds:

  • Manually export affected abandoned checkouts as CSV, filter out conversions, and send custom follow-up emails through an email platform (ensuring compliance with consent laws)
  • Create draft orders and send personalized outreach via Shopify Email, Klaviyo, Gmail, or WhatsApp
  • Set up a separate win-back or browse abandonment flow for leads who haven’t purchased within a specific timeframe
  • Run a one-time targeted campaign to warm leads with gentle reminders or incentives

The corrected automation will properly handle future abandoned checkouts. One responder promoted their app (Retentionly) as a solution with AI integration and pay-per-email pricing.

Hi there,

I have been trying to find a way to resend emails to people who abandoned checkout. The problem I am facing is that I have fixed the automation flow and it will start sending them out to FUTURE abandoned checkouts, but now all the people that went through the flow error before my correction were left unattended.

And when I click into their abandoned checkout, I do not see a send email button (see attachment), all it show is the Flow email button and take me back to correcting the email flow. Is there a way for me to attend to all the abandoned checkouts that happened before my correction?

Thank you so much for your help!

Hey! Totally get what you mean. been there.

Yeah, unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t let you manually trigger abandoned checkout emails after they’ve already been skipped due to a broken flow. Once they’re missed, they kinda stay in that “stuck” state.

But here’s a workaround that could be helpful:

  • Go to those abandoned checkouts > copy their email > and just create a draft order for them.
  • Then manually email them (or use an app like Shopify Email, Klaviyo, or even Gmail + WhatsApp) and send a friendly note like,

“Hey! Noticed you left something behind. Just wanted to make it easy for you to complete your order.”

Also, going forward, your fixed automation will catch new ones, so at least you’re good moving forward!

Hope this helps.

Hi @FashionReview ,
That’s a really common challenge and a great question, especially when you’ve fixed your abandoned checkout flow but past visitors were missed during that downtime.

Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t allow resending Flow emails retroactively

Once an abandoned checkout is marked as processed by Flow, even if the email was never successfully sent, you can’t trigger it again from the admin manually. That’s why the “Send email” button is missing in those cases.

Here are a few options to reconnect with those missed visitors:

  1. Export the affected checkouts manually
    • Go to Orders > Abandoned Checkouts and filter by date
    • Export the list as a CSV, then remove any entries that already converted
    • Import that list into your email platform (with care to follow email consent laws) and send a custom follow-up
  2. Send a one time campaign to warm leads
    • If you captured emails during checkout, you can run a targeted email saying “We noticed you didn’t complete your purchase”
    • Include the abandoned item if you have that data, or offer a gentle nudge or small discount to encourage the return
  3. Add these contacts to a win back or browse abandonment flow
    • Create a separate automation for leads who haven’t purchased within X days
    • This can keep them engaged without depending on the original checkout flow
