Sales Attributed to Marketing number on dashboard - how is it made up?

so, there is a number reported on the analytics dashboard for Sales Attributed to Marketing (currently bottom left of the dashboard)

When you open the report, none of the numbers listed as totals for the referring channels add up to the summary number reported on the dashboard - can anyone help explain what the summary number on the dashboard is comprised of and why none of the numbers by referring channel on the expanded report add up to that summary number?

thank you!

Hi @sam_noa ,

To answer your question, Shopify calculates “Sales Attributed to Marketing” in the dashboard by using a combination of data from their analytics tools and tracking pixels.

When a customer clicks on a marketing campaign or ad, a tracking pixel is placed on their device, allowing Shopify to track their activity on the website. Shopify’s analytics tools then attribute any sales made by that customer during their session to the corresponding marketing campaign.

The “Sales Attributed to Marketing” metric in the dashboard displays the total sales generated from customers who clicked on a specific marketing campaign or ad and made a purchase within a certain timeframe. This allows merchants to measure the effectiveness of their marketing efforts and make data-driven decisions on how to allocate their advertising budgets.

To see separate sales from every channel in the Shopify dashboard, you can check another report called “Sales by Channel”. This report breaks down your sales by each sales channel you have enabled in your Shopify store, such as your online store, Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, eBay, and more.

To access the “Sales by Channel” report, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your Shopify account.
  • From the Shopify dashboard, click on the “Analytics” tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
  • Select “Reports” from the dropdown menu.
  • Choose the “Sales by Channel” report from the list of available reports.
  • Once you’ve selected the “Sales by Channel” report, you’ll be able to see your sales broken down by channel for a specific date range. You can also view other metrics such as orders, conversion rates, and average order value for each channel.

Hope the answer is helpful for you. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for taking the time - unfortunately it doesn’t explain exactly what the attributed summary number is made up of in this context - here is the summary number on the dashboard, and the data in the expanded report for that period:

nothing in the expanded report adds up to that summary number

nor does any combination of numbers on the channel report for that same period, add up to that summary number:

its unclear if any of these numbers can be relied upon given that nothing ads up to the total attributed number from the dashboard, if that makes sense
